Hello there Veteran Pirates, Forum bookworms, newbies And Realist ( honestly he is his own category,no offense mate ) We all know Grapeshot did alot of Bullshit at the Release And it was And still is your right to react to it. But it seems that many People Who really enjoy this game forgot about something really Important imo And that is actually the negativ Review on Steam And other platforms. I wont ask People to just Change it if they still Dont like the Game, but as many others you might have forgotten to Change it into something positive. Potential Players may or may Not Play because of your Review. There are Tons of Players who have over 1k hours in this game And i Dont think anyone spends 1k hours on a Game he does Not like. Even if its only one Person reading this And changing his Review it is a Start. We all have high hopes And Maybe its time for us to give Other Players the Chance to enjoy this game And also bring some Motivation to our Grapeshot guys

The powers that be at Atlas really should play the game more than whatever amount that they do. The most active, loyal, and dedicated players so far in the 7 months since Atlas's launch have been repeatedly given the impression that those calling the shots do not play the game much if at all. I am not talking about design choices that split the community, those have their supporters and detractors. I am talking about design choices that leave any experienced player scratching their head wondering how anyone at Grapeshot ever thought *insert your favorite dumb idea here* was a good idea. Examples include, but are not limited to: -Insanely over the top rent prices for player shops that render them pointless. -Initial spawn rates of sotd's and hostile creatures that made play for the average player insanely difficult. -Storm frequency and damage out of all proportion to reality that made travel a perilous crapshoot which could cause players to lose tons of time and resources invested in ships and everything on them to be lost due to unavoidable storms which sprang up with little to no warning. -Unnecessarily complicated land claim and retention mechanics which practically invite griefing of other players. -Skill mechanics that require the ability to craft an item in order to be able to use it. In any game purporting to support ingame economy, this is unbelievably dumb. Despite the fact some of these things have been corrected (others over corrected), these and other design choices have left the playerbase wondering if those calling the shots at GrapeCard ever actually log in and play the game they're creating. If they don't, they should. If they do, perhaps they need to do so more often, or interact with other players more when they do. If they are actually doing both these things, we might all be screwed. Because honestly, even though the game has it's moments and is fun enough to win my time, there are more than one or two calls here that are "should have died on the brainstorming table" bad. Yes, the players in an Early Access game are here to provide feedback and input, but the needed level of input and feedback should start somewhere above, not at "fire is hot." I don't care who it is, but whoever is making the decisions that lead to these things really ought to spend more time in the game. Or at least stop making design choices so facepalm worthy as to give the impression they never do. This is not my first EA rodeo, but it is the first one to make me wonder if the people making it ever play it.

While the game continues it's voyage into Davi Jones' Locker, though about some possibilities to make ship battle more interesting, more piratety but less fatal. Wanted to share this maybe not yet consistent ideas for feedback. I put it here in PVP forum, as obviously there is not much discussion under Suggestions... Currently ship battle – if it ever happens – is ending in someone running away or getting sunk. Boarding does happen, but only to sink the ship. In a war setting sinking the other ship is the only way to get it out of the way. But it is also the best way to raid a ship – after it sunk, and unfortuantly the game makes it possible to dive to it all the way to the deepest bottom of Davi Jones Locker. As most players interested in ship battle have complained, boarding and taking over a ship is not possible, as the claim timer is stupid long and popcorning of the cargo before or when it sinks by the owner is modus operandi, so no looting... As ships are always sunk for their resources and cargo or 'just because', the Devs made them cheap enough so you can build new ones very fast. This tries to mitigate the problem of them getting lost so fast, mainly while offline. In the age of sailing ships, ship combat rarely resulted in the sinking of the ship. As the cannons would not make much damage below the waterline ships would not sink so easy – cannon balls would loose terminal energy fast when hitting water or bounce of the water like a stone flipped flat over water and hit the enemy hull above waterline. Ship to ship combat would be determined by whos ship will loose the ability to continue fighting because of loss of crew, which get wounded and killed by enemy fire, loss of maneuverability like rudder and sails/masts, or fire breaking out uncontrolable. Small arms fire and boarding was a valid option to overpower a ships crew. After a ship was defeated it was looted, taken over or sunk, depending of the state of the ship and value of the ship itself. The idea I want to develop here is that sinking ships in Atlas should be not the go to only solution, but the least likely. As obviously the game allows for very toxic behaviour which would continue to result in ships get sunk, just because, it unfortunately would need some game restrictions prohibiting this. But as this is still a game, rules define it anyway, so it not have to be realistic with everything possible at all time. Main concern here is, that a sailing game needs people sailing and somewhat willing to risk ship combat. Otherwise what is the point? Therefore my idea involves some fixed piracy rules of engagement. For this the Devs need to add some piracy things in the game for ships = flags and colors. If two ships meet in the game and one wants to attack the other it raises The Black. This happens automatic when it makes damage to the other ship or by captain choice. In the later case any ship within some radius will get the notification that they are being persued by a pirate. Ships hit get the same notification on receiving damage. The defender now has the option to raise the White flag at any time. This will result in the defender cutting sails stopping the ship automatically and stop making any damage to the attacker. On the other hand the attacker can no longer make damage to the defender aswell. The attacker now can board the defender and loot an amount of its cargo and gold depending on how soon the defender raised the White. Lets say within 2 minutes of raising the Black the loot is 25%. Every minute after that it is 25% more. So the defender has an option to decide what it is worth for him. Please do understand this as World of Atlas agreed Rules for Gentlemen of Fortune automatically enforced. Also the ship weapons of the defender gets 'spiked' making them useless for some time, maybe 1 hr or more. Optionally the defender could be protected from looting for some more time after it got looted, unless he makes damage to anyone in the meantime. Only if the attacker goes away from the other ship – out of range of the Black flag, the defender gets control back and can continue. If the engagement continues without the other ship giving up, raising the White, for some time, say 5 mins, which already equals 100% loot, the attacker can raise the Jolly Roger – the Red. This means that if the defender is defeated the attacker has the option to kill all crew and take over the ship, if it is still floating. Upon getting the Red the defender has one more minute to give up before he can be sunk or claimed. His decision again. By the way, the attacker always has the Red flag upon him, if he starts the attack – pirates can not expect quarter. Maybe that could stay on him for some time after a fight? Please note that at this point there not need to be any shots fired at all. If the defender just gives up early he will get treated better by the victor, until the time he must expect no quarters given. There would an option that the loot % and time to raise the flag get shortend the more damage the defender does to the attack, meaning that he resists more. Next up the looting. As it is now, looting can be made impossible because of the defender popcorning everything. This cannot be allowed under the above idea for the attacker. Therefore I propose that the moment the Black starts everything in the ships resource box cannot be taken out other by the current automatic use = repair hammer. Same for the ammo box and any other storage box, like bookshelf. The only box that can now be used by the defender is the new ship locker which only holds things like weapons, armor and ship tools. The moment the defender raises the White he also can no longer use the ship locker. The defender can again use the storage when the attacker leaves him. Next up the actual combat. As it should be the case ships should be defeated more often before they sink, damage to ships should be handled differently. Mainly damage is against ship speed, manouverability, cannon reload time. Or combined into damage to the crew, which looses abilities the more damage it gets. This makes the hit ship slower so it cannot run away, less manouverable. Loosing cannon crew / reload speed makes resistance less useful. This is all used to get the defender to submit. Again the attacker does not need to raise the Red, still leaving the defender to surrender and not loose the ship, just the loot. If the game could handle crew damage this way, crew will stop working if they get damaged enough but not yet die. More damage will kill them ofcourse. So even if the ship gets damaged that the crew does not work anymore (partly or all) they are not lost=dead. Therefore high level crew can be rescued by surrender. Also high level crew with more health is obviously better and good to acquire. Ship resistance per plank gets lower by damage, allowing more damage to the crew behind it.Also personal armor would help. Option: by the way only ship structures (deck and planks, maybe some new form of optional compartments) should work as protection. Any other structures (walls, ceiling, ramps) give no protection. No armoring. Also to promote gun ports, guns on deck would have no protection for that matter. There should be different typ of ammo. Ball for plank penetration, Chain for sail damage, Shot for unprotected (low plank health) crew. Optional boarding party. The game right now allows the ship crew to dismount cannons etc. and aggressively engage enemy on the ship. What we need would be the option for the attacker to send his Marines to 'spawn' from his ship to the other ship within certain range. I think the problem right now is, if one would order their crew onto another ships they would never reach the other ship while it is moving. Thats why the easiest option is them be able to just 'spawn' on the other ship for now. Also I think that ship crew under attack, as well as the attack should just spawn on the main deck, so noone gets stuck somewhere below causing frustration. Obviously we need the option now to have more crew on ship to allow for Marines. Therefore get rid of the crew limit. They have weight and that should be enough, especially if they are armed and armored. Maybe raise food consumption. Spawning. If a ship engages in combat the beds on each should be locked, so that every bed only can be used once more. This allows some allies to spawn in and help, but not unlimited. Also makes more beds on ship more valueable. This is somewhat like the bed timers with the kraken going to 1 hr disallowing respawn while the fight goes on. Oh and by the way, if the PC crew all die the NPC crew will raise the White automatically. Ship damage, fire, sinking. As the crew = function of the ship takes damage faster than the ship itself it should usually not sink most of the time, before the crew is incapacitated. There should be some random option for fires and maybe ammo explosions making lots of damage. This if not controlled could sink a ship on it's own. Other than that sinking a ship should most of the time be an option for the owner, meaning either the defender sinks it before capture or the attacker after he raised the Red, captures it and becomes the owner. Capturing ships. A ship can be taken over when the attacker was able to raise the Red for atleast one minute and then gets to control the other ship, defeating the other crew atleast to incapacity, killing the PC crew. There could be the option that surviving NPC crew joins the attacker. This could be determined by crew level and maybe a pirate skill of the attacker. Oh and maybe just for fun, the PC crew of the defender can be put on the guiotine for punishment for not giving up fast enough. Recapturing ships. If a ship gets captured this way, it still keeps his name for some time and stays shown on the defenders map. So Captain Jack Sparrow has an option to get his Pearl back. This could be like that if the original owner gets on the ship within the next 48 hr (?) and gets rid of the NPC crew (or maybe even using his pirate covincing skill) he can just steal it back and get away. After this reclaim timer runs out the new owner can change the name to his liking and the old owner looses the map marker. This would be in line with the Devs idea that ships should have a history and should change owners. Ship repairs. Ships should be more time consuming to repair. This is because if a ship is damaged in war for example it should take some time before it can return to the front. If it not gets repaired between engagement it obviously engages with lower health and therefore starts with lower values in speed and so on, and also the crew is not as well protected by it. Ship repairs not anchored should be only stopping leaks and fires. Full ship repair should only be possible while fully anchored. Parts repair points over time after the resources are invested. PC repair (skill and mini game) could give bonuses to the time, as would captain skills. Using a shipyard of correct size should be faster. Ship cost. As ships would now not always sink, there is no need to make them cheap to build = easy to replace. Building a ship should now be a bigger 'time' investment for players, meaning more resources to farm, taking more time. Also repair would cost correspondingly more. Also if they are more expensive to make their captains would be more willing to raise the White before they loose them. If they stay cheap they will just be suicided. Optional, because ships become more time valueable and finaly better able to capture it should finally become possible to redesign them in shipyards and also to respec their skills (for a cost). So what could that look like in game? If you are just going from A to B for say discoveries or tames and you get attacked you surrender and loose some resources and be on your way. If you haul resources you loose more resources as a % of the total. If you decide to fight, because you think you will win or run away, it is your risk decision. This counts for the attacker also. If you are in war type engagements, your ship could be lost with the Red. Or atleast taken out of combat by spiking the ship weapons for some time after you gave up. As ships would become more valueable, but less likely to sink (per decisions of her captain) griefing by outright sinking everything is more controlable by the owner. Meaning loosing the ship is less likely for the little guy, promoting that he builds a ship and uses it more. Because there would be more ships actually that are on the sea, more pirate action for everyone. And maybe you find the big fat price. There should be a system, where the spyglass would allow (like the pirate skill) seeing some or all what is in the ship cargo. Maybe just how heavy a ship is loaded, as can be seen how deep it is in the water. Therefore not needing to stop every ship you come by. There could be an option for a war token to allow to raise the Red from the beginning on the designated war enemy, so you can sink or capture any of their ships. But what about anchored ships? Well I am still advocating to have a change to the island protection system. My favorit would be a full PVP radius around the flag and PVE protection everywhere else until the island gets declaimed. This would include anchored ships. But if that separate issue does stay the same the described system above still works. Because as said if there is no PC on the ship, the NPC crew gives up. In the case of the Player being offline or not close to the ship, it means immediately = minimum loot taken and loot protection for some time, maybe until next login of the player. So either take any valuables of the ship before going offline or loose some, your ship will very likely be there tomorrow. Thoughts?

On this subject there is an old joke: sits the guy on rail the tracks, suited the second the guy and says - move away. The first move ass, the second sits on this place. The first asks-Why did you have me moved? - Your butt warmed this place up ...

The ship you're referring to would most likely be a Frigate. Which is a ship class that had at lest 28 guns.

I mentioned this on the discord, and also put forward the idea of removing completely the low wind mechanic. Needless to say I was shot down by a myriad of what I can only assume are no lifers telling me to 'get good' and to 'time my sailing' better, then there were the people saying its fine and that they enjoy sailing. It wasn't received well. Which is just odd. Gameplay in my opinion.. should be engaging and fun. sailing is neither of those things atm. and FAR too time consuming. the fact that speed sails arnt being fixed because of overuse and troubles balancing doesnt help either. Im just glad to see other people that are of like mind like me, that dont want to spend hours upon hours doing nothing in game. (I stopped playing Ark for this very reason, everything in the game seemed to have been implemented just to slow you down and keep you in game) having said all that, Im still playing Atlas, as theres just enough to do besides massive journeys and endless sailing. im +1k hours so I like to think I have some idea of what im talking about, and I support this post. anything to get me across the map faster.

There are 3 stages for durability: Green - Durability is good Yellow - Durability is moderate Red - Durability is poor If the portion of the ship is flashing, it means this area has a leak. We will look to make this UI element colorblind friendly in the future. Map Menu UI Visual Revamp The Atlas tab map UI has been revamped visually for an easier navigation of the regions. Instead of having dropdown tabs of the regions on the left, all regions available will be shown on one Overworld map. Players will be able to click and see all regions available on the overworld map. To get to the Overworld map click on the icon of the globe in the top left of your map screen. The region the player is currently in on the Overworld map is highlighted in green. Open Water Servers There is a new way to traverse through the atlas’ regions besides portals. There are now intermediate open water servers that connect regions to one another. There are no islands to be found here, just open seas and the treasure and dangers that come along with it. They are known as open waters and there are four of them within the world. They are connected through all sides of the Central Waters region. Depending on which cardinal direction the player goes through determines which region they travel to. Transient and Static nodes for this path can be found and harvested exclusively within the Uncharted Sea region. Industrial Wonder: Power Nodes Transient Node - Geothermal Vents This transient node is similar to the Army of the Damned ones in that they have a time limit of one week before they deplete, despawn, and respawn at a different location, but they spawn more inland. Players will need to craft the new Ore Miner structure in order to harvest the resource of these nodes. These transient nodes produce a new resource type of coal: Brimstone Static Nodes There are two variants of Industrial static nodes - Lava vents and Sulfur pits. There is no need to create a harvesting structure for either as Pathfinders who’ve traveled here have built them already, but they seem to have perished. Lava Vents produce a new metal: Orichalcum. Sulfur Pits produce a new type of coal: Pure Sulfur Both of these resources are needed to craft new Industrial structures and gear now and in the future. Lava static nodes allow players to build the Industrial Smithy. Sulfur pit static nodes will get new crafting recipes in the future! Visit new areas based on geographical locations Regions Available Rookie Cove - An area for all pathfinders to cruise the seas in peace. A cove for all to gather their bearings and test their newfound abilities until they are comfortable to progress full sail ahead! Central Waters - The largest area in the game and host to a healthy mix of tropical/temperate islands, but also an ancient evil told in Atlantean myths. Can you find all the power stones and defeat the greatest challenge? South America - A region home to tropical/equatorial areas. However, there seems to be faint chanting amongst this region. Will you be able to find the source of this hidden power? Africa - A region home to the hottest desert Islands around. Crocodiles, venomous snakes and lots and lots of sand call this region home. Antarctica - The harshest sub-zero climates, icebergs, penguins, and illusive yeti's populate the islands around here. North Pole - The north pole is similar to Antarctica, but to the north. Same freezing weather but perhaps the treasures here are the defining difference. Atlas Menu Map The Atlas Menu has been modified to fit the new regions available. The following tabs are available for you to look at. Overworld - The first map drafted by early cartographers. A general outline of the world is available. Rookie Cove - The home to the starting, self-titled region Central Ocean - You will find the map to the Central Waters region here Mediterranean Sea - The blazing hot desert islands of Africa region is here Central Maw - Uncharted waters, but rumor has it that the Kraken's lair is here South Atlantic Ocean - Tropical Oasis of the South America Region are found here Arctic Ocean - The extreme colds of the North Pole Region are located here Southern Ocean - The freezing depths of the Antarctica Region are here Portals Atlantean technology has arisen from the dark depths of abysses unknown. With it however, it looks like traveling from region to region has become a whole lot quicker, but perhaps even more dangerous. Pathfinder Portals - The privateers before you have taken it upon themselves to start studying the portals as well as providing safe passage through these portals. Located within Rookie Cove and Central Waters, these portals will transport you between these regions! Perpetual Portals - It seems the Atlanteans created a sort of oceanic highway. A free, reliable way of travel between regions. They have arisen from the depths and are available for all to travel through and explore! Damaged Portals - In the thousands of years Atlanteans have gone missing, not all of the portals have been kept in functional shape or have been left unfinished. These portals need some extra gem power to travel through. Be warned these do not stay open forever! Cost: Magic Marrow: 50 Gold Coin: 250 Central Portal - Seemingly, this seems to be the first type of portal ever created! However, it seems to have been keeping something away rather than allowing others in. Located in the Central Waters Region only, it seems to need power stones to open. Will you be the first to see what's on the other side? Power Node system Transient Nodes Transient Nodes are special locations on islands that allow for unique resource harvesting. Functionality still works and can be used on Unofficial Servers, a word from our Lead Designer: v401.9 - Disabled Claim Flag height limit on PvE servers (only meant to be active on PvP) v401.5 (Server 401.8) - Islands on the Official Network now have a maximum z-value for how high Claim Flags can be placed, unique to the island. These are based on the highest terrain points, before considering mountains, large rock formations or steep pillars. The in-game HUD will let you know whether your current claim flag is in a valid location. If your claim flag is not in a valid location, when attempting to place a new one you will receive HUD feedback informing you whether a spot is valid or not. Players will have approximately a month (Mid/Late November) to reposition their flag to a new location. We'll provide a more specific date closer to the patch which changes this. When placing the flag at the new spot, it will automatically destroy the old claim flag and transfer the inventory into the new flag. - Unofficials can activate this setting by changing the following config in their game.ini: MaxSettlementFlagZ = 999999 (default, which means FlagZ can be placed at 99999 z height above the per-island specific height). This is an offset value, if you adjust this, it will use the per-island specific max height + the offset. For example, making it 3000 will look for the highest 'legitimate' location on an island, and then add an additional 3000 z to that height to determine the flag's maximum location. Notes on the harpoon change: we feel that harpoons have become too strong in the meta to the point where they dominate ship PvP. Whilst this change may not perfectly address all situations, we expect it will encourage more planning when harpooning along with additional risk and decision-making whilst also opening up options to the harpooned ship. v400.45 - Setup loot table overrides for DevKit (Devkit patch incoming) - Fixed a server-side crash - Disabled 2x Bonus Event on Officials - Updated Gamepad controls screen to reflect new gunport and anchor controls - Action Wheel toggle for Yell and Whisper Modes for gamepad (PC) - Fixed Atlantean heavy helmet colorized icon - Fixed Atlantean female medium shirt colorization (added region for emissive) v400.24 (server only) - Enabled Bonus Rates on the Official Network for 2x Gold, Harvesting, and Taming - Fixed a server-side crash v400.41 - Cyclops Heavy Boot and Hat Icon Fix - Hydra Hide Glove Icon Fix - Commander outfit torso colorization - When claiming a Wild Pirate Camp, the flag will now show the company flag painting - Painting a wild pirate camp flag will set the company flag painting - [XBOX SPECIFIC] Fixed a crash caused by vivox/parties in non-dedicated servers - [XBOX SPECIFIC] Fixed a bug caused by vivox/parties which would cause the fps to degrade over time - Fixed an issue where searching for remote inventory text would then populate that saved text in all search fields after opening inventories twice - Fixed issue where players no longer gained EXP on freeports - [GAMEPAD SPECIFIC] On the captain's wheel, X shall toggle gunports (no longer RB) - [GAMEPAD SPECIFIC] On the captain's wheel, if RB or LB are held, X shall not toggle gunports (should activate the hotbar/feat entry instead) - [GAMEPAD SPECIFIC] On the captain's wheel, add Lower/Raise anchor to VIEW action wheel, so that captains can use anchor v400.38 (v400.37 on Xbox) - Fixed a spelling error on the Plunder Skill description - The cursor is now kept in place when navigating full folders - Fixed craftables not showing in folders in the hand-craftable view of the UI - R3 will now swap inventories in the UI when looking at two inventories (ie: a storage box) to switch to the first item in the other inventory - Double-tapping A on any item in the Trade UI will no longer open the cancel UI - Level limit no longer applies in Freeports on non-dedicated session modes - The last search-strings on all Inventory Menu search bars will now be saved - Fixed the ability to use emotes whilst dancing - Added one more crew by default to a sloop - Increased non-dedicated tether range - Non-Dedicated Servers will now allow you to receive resources when demolishing structures on an anchored boat - Added attenuation distance to Dive-Into-Water sounds - Net fishing sounds adjusted to only play locally - Increased Net Fishing speed threshold by 25% - Fixed various stalls on Xbox and cases which would cause the Xbox' FPS to drop and the game to stutter (we are still looking into more cases of this) - Removed the range-limit on voice chat for non-dedicated sessions - Fixed a stereo audio bug which would cause players not to hear each other - Players are able to fast travel to and from a ship that the host is not standing on in non-dedi (so long as the fast-travel destination is within tether-range) - Increased collision size of dropped bags. Is it possible to get another ship type fit between the Brigantine and Galleon, Brigantine have much Lower HP than the Galleon, but it is much more maneuverable than galleon, but only have 2 gun more than a schooner. Galleon have very high fire power, but it is useless in turning, so if you kill SoTD with it, it will take a very long time to turn and get the loot. if there is a ship type that can have more HP, fire power of the Brigantine but just a bit less maneuverable still more maneuverable than a galleon but lest HP and fire power, that will be great there are number of ship type in history can fit for it can look it up

Introduction Looking around, I have found a need for a comprehensive guide on the most efficient use of speed sails, cargo racks, and long-distance resource hauling. Especially now that singleplayer mode allows for quick and easy testing, we need to get more factual information about ATLAS out to the public. For simplicity's sake, I will avoid discussing weight sails, handling sails, and item quality (maybe you can look forward to a guide on those subjects from me in the future). Outline: TL;DR results Answering individual questions Quick summary of results Explanation of singleplayer testing Summary As a TL;DR, here are the questions I will be answering today and a quick summary of the answer: How do ship speed, sails, and weight work behind-the-scenes? Every ship has a max speed, if it theoretically weighed 0 lbs. Each sail you add contributes to the max speed, linearly. The speed is related to the square root of the percentage of your ship weight that is not filled. The following table has a few notable percentages (the speed % is compared to the max speed). For each type of ship, what speed sail configuration (small/medium/large) gives the fastest ship? sloop: 1 medium and 1 small speed sail schooner: 1 large and one small speed sail brig: 3 large speed sails galleon: 6 large speed sails What ship is the fastest? Contrary to popular belief, with optimal sails, galleons are the fastest, followed closely by schooners, and then brigantines and finally sloops (rafts aren't real ships :P). How many cargo racks should I put on my ship to get the fastest ship? This is a very complex question that depends on your ship type, the total weight you want to carry, your max weight, and the "empty" weight of your ship. As a rule of thumb, add a cargo rack if you have another 4,000 lbs in resources to put in one, and make sure you fill existing cargo racks as much as possible before adding more. What is the optimal way to haul resources long distances in as little time as possible? Once again, this depends largely on the factors in the previous answer. As a rule of thumb, load up your ship to around 50% weight when you are hauling resources. Here are some related questions that I Won't be answering today, but I will include some links to people that have answered them in the past (to varying degrees of thoroughness and accuracy - be your own judge on the matter): How accurate is the in-game depiction of knots (speed)? Do higher-quality (fine/journeyman/etc.) sails actually give any benefit? For a more in-depth discussion on each of these questions, keep reading! I will lead you through the testing I have done in singleplayer mode, and we will discuss factors that I had to ignore while testing, etc. Onward to information! IMPORTANT NOTE BEFORE WE BEGIN: I am going to use the terms "maximum speed" and "speed" throughout this guide, and these each refer to a different concept. The maximum speed of a ship is the theoretical maximum speed it could go if it weighed 0 lbs. The speed of a ship is the actual speed of the ship, with whatever weight it currently has on it. Most of the math is done with the maximum speed, not the current speed. I will start by talking about how to use the speed and weight of a ship to compute the maximum speed. How do speed, sails, and weight calculations work behind-the-scenes? Ship speed depends on the type of ship you are sailing, the number and type of sails your ship is equipped with, the number of cargo racks on board, and the weight percentage. We will discuss all of these things here. I will lead you through the testing I did and try to explain some of the nuances that I had to think about First - The effect of weight on ships: My results: Ship speed is related to the weight of the ship according to the following equation: speed = speed_max * sqrt(1-weight/max_weight) NOTE: This does not take into account cargo racks - see the equation below for a more complete equation. This results in a graph like the following: The maximum speed depends on the ship you are in and the sails you use - we will discuss this more in a bit. Since the speed changes as the square root of the remaining weight, you can see that the weight drops off really quickly as you get closer to 100% full. Thus, any weight above around 80% starts to really slow the ship down, and for that reason, I suggest never sailing above 85% capacity, since you just travel too slow. My testing method: I spawned each ship in using ssf <sloop, schooner, brigantine, galleon> (pick one of the arguments in the <>). I set up the wind using the commands setwind 100 and setignorewind true (both are necessary for consistency). Then I opened the sails to full and marked down the current weight of the ship and the speed, once it stabilized. Using this method, the ship speed is very stable, unlike in the actual servers, where the speed bounces all over the place. Now, I used the admin command gfi gem_base 500 0 0 to get 500 gems, and I recorded the weight and speed - rinse and repeat until the ship stops moving. We now have a data for ship speed versus weight. Plotting the speed of the ship versus the square root part of the equation above, I got a straight line with the slope equal to the maximum velocity for that sail arrangement: NOTE: Keep in mind that this method will spawn a schooner with 2 medium speed sails and a galleon with 5 large speeds sails, both of which are not the optimal sail arrangement. The max speed I got from these tests just correspond to a sub-optimal layout of sails. The important part here is how straight these lines are, which proves that this equation is correct. This is a great fit, so I am pretty confident about the equation and the max speeds we get from this method. From now on, we can just manipulate the speed equation to solve for speed_max if we know the weight and speed of the ship. This will be useful in the next section. Second - The effect of sails on the speed of a ship: My results: Sails add linearly to the max speed of a ship. That means that half as many sails will push the ship half as fast. However, I found it surprising that each type of sail increases the max speed differently for each ship. The following table summarizes my results. If you can find any patterns in that data, please let me know - I couldn't find anything. The main thing to note with this table is the speed per sail point. Remember that small sails cost 1 sail point, mediums cost 1.7, and larges cost 2.66 (ATLAS rounds this to 2.7, but it actually is 2.66 when you add multiple). The sails get more speed per point the larger you get (looking at a single ship). This means that it is always beneficial to use as large of sails as possible, and fill in any remaining points with smaller sails. This leads to the following optimal configurations: Sloop: 1 medium speed sail (max speed is 16.03 knots) Schooner: 1 large and 1 small speed sail (max speed is 21.05 + 4.55 = 25.6 knots) Brigantine: 3 large speed sails (max speed is 23.79) Galleon: 6 large speed sails (max speed is 26.88) NOTE: I discuss the optimal sail configuration more in the next section. This means that galleons are the fastest ship, followed closely by schooners, and then by brigs and sloops are the slowest. This is important, since many people tend to believe that schooners are the fastest ship, but this data shows that they are actually over a full knot slower on average. My testing method: I spawned the ships as I did above. This time, I removed all sails and set up the configuration I wanted to look at (for example, 16 small speed sails on a galleon). I marked the weight and speed while slowly removing sails. Plotting the maximum speed (calculated as mentioned above) versus number of sails gave a line, and fitting a linear trendline in excel gave a slope that you see in the table above. If you want to compute the max speed of a ship, just add together the values for each sail from the table above. Third - How do cargo racks affect speed? My results: A full set of cargo racks (2 for a schooner, 4 for a brig, and 6 for a galleon) will reduce your maximum speed by 40%. This means that each cargo rack reduces your speed by the following amounts: Schooner: 20% per cargo rack Brigantine: 10% per cargo rack Galleon: 6.67% per cargo rack If you only have some of the cargo racks, it affects your speed linearly (for example, 2 racks on a galleon reduces your speed by 40% * 2/6 = 13.3%). However, the racks also reduce the weight of anything inside of them by 80%, up to 8,000 lbs pre-reduction. This means that a full cargo rack reduces your ship weight by a total of 6400 lbs (80% of 8,000). The weight reduction will make your ship go faster, but it must counteract the speed reduction just for having the rack on the ship to be beneficial. This is complicated enough that I gave it its own section toward the end of this post. In general, always drop empty racks, and fill up your existing racks before you add another. My testing method: In singleplayer, spawn in ships as mentioned above. Get the ship up to speed and start adding empty cargo racks. Make sure to take note of the weight each time you add a cargo rack (they weigh 50 lbs each). You can then compute the maximum speed as mentioned above, and the plot of maximum speed versus number of cargo racks gives a straight line. The slope of this line is the maximum speed decrease per cargo rack. This will vary based on your sail configuration, but the percentage speed decrease (speed decrease / maximum speed) will be the same for every ship. Assuming you read the section above about maximum speed, we can update our equation to include the number of cargo racks: speed = speed_max * (1 - 0.40 * num_racks/max_racks) * sqrt(1-weight/max_weight) In addition, I added weight to the cargo racks to verify that the rest of the equation still holds with cargo racks. Indeed, you see the same square root behavior. This means that the cargo rack has only the two effects listed above: max speed decrease, and weight decrease. What speed sail configuration makes the fastest ship/ what type of ship is the fastest? My results: The table in the previous section summarizes my results about the how each sail type affects the maximum speed of a ship. Using this data, you can see that larger sails are generally more efficient than smaller sails. For example, look at a brigantine: Large speed sail adds 7.93 knots to your max speed, whereas the medium sails add 4.24 to the max speed. This means that the large speed sails add 2.94 knots per sail point, and mediums speed sails only add 2.49 knots per sail point. This is the reason that you should always use larger sails first, then fill in any remaining points with smaller sails. Using the table on the left, you can see that galleons are the fastest ship in the game, when used with 6 large speed sails. This is followed by a schooner with 1 large and 1 small speed sail, and then by a brig with 3 large speed sails, and finally the sloop with 1 medium speed sail. My testing method: I mentioned it above, but once again, briefly - spawn in each type of ship and mark down the weight of the ship, the speed you travel, and the number of sails as you vary the number and type of sails on the ship. The plot of maximum speed versus number of sails is a line, and the slope is equal to the max speed increase per sail. As for the optimal sail configuration, I did not test every combination of sails possible for each ship. Although we previously discussed why larger sails are more efficient, this does not automatically mean that using only the largest sails is always going to be the most efficient, since there are some leftover points that could, in theory, be used more effectively. I set up an excel spreadsheet (on the left) with all possible combinations of sails for which you cannot add another sail. Some of these use all of the sail points, and some do not. I then computed the maximum speed with each configuration and looked for the maximum speed out of all combinations. This just so happened to be the result where the largest sails are used first, as mentioned above (and everywhere else). This just proves definitively that there is no odd combination of sails that uses sail points more effectively that beats the tactic above. How many cargo racks should I add to my ship to maximize speed? Another way to phrase this question would be - how much cargo would I have to put into a new cargo rack to justify the additional speed decrease? This depends on the ship max carry weight, your ship's "empty" weight, and the number of cargo racks already on your ship. First, let's categorize the weight into "free" and "fixed" weight, by whether or not you can put it into a cargo rack. Fixed weight includes plank weight, repair materials, and crafting stations, to name a few examples. Free weight can include whatever cargo you have on board, armor or tools, or even blueprints (although you shouldn't store blueprints in cargo racks - there are only 100 slots to fill up with 8,000 lbs to be the most efficient). The reason we want to categorize the weight is because the fixed weight is just dead weight, there is nothing we can do to reduce it. However, it will affect when we should add racks, since the speed is not linear with respect to weight. This means that we should add a rack when the amount of free weight we can store increases the speed of the ship (by reducing the weight) more than the extra cargo rack would decrease the speed. Mathematically, this gives us the equation (where x is the free weight and n is the number of cargo racks currently on the ship) Obviously, this gets complicated fast, since we want to solve for x... Well, I did that for you, and here is the equation for the amount of free weight you need to store when adding a cargo rack: where the empty weight is your fixed weight, and f(n) is listed below: ok, this is still quite complex (we haven't even touched what to do when the free weight is outside of the range between 0 and 8,000, for example), let's unpack this a little. Unpacking the results: If the math makes you queasy, that's fine. I assume most people don't want the math, just the rule they should follow. Unfortunately, there is no simple rule, because the math is so complicated. But, we can get a few interesting tidbits from it: The heavier your ship is without any cargo (the fixed weight), the earlier you should be adding cargo racks If your galleon is very light (no fixed weight), the you should add a rack if you have 15.6% of your weight capacity in free weight. For a stock ship with 30k lbs capacity, this would be about 4,700 lbs of cargo. Of course, this assumes you have all your other racks filled already. Here is a graph comparing the speed of a ship with optimal use of cargo racks versus no use of cargo racks. The flatter sections show where racks are added (for a default galleon with no fixed weight): This may feel a little underwhelming, but you can get much more accurate numbers if you actually compute the free weight from the equation above. As a note, the amount of free weight needed changes with the number of racks on your ship, so it will change as you add more and more cargo. I suggest you add a sign on your ship, noting the ship capacity and fixed weight right after you make it, and then keep track of when you should add each of the 6 boxes on another sign. What is the optimal way to haul resources long distances in as little time as possible? This is another very complicated question. In addition to the problem of the cargo racks (addressed thoroughly above), you now have the added complexity of changing your goal. There are (as far as I can see) 2 main goals when it comes to hauling resources: Haul as many resources as possible in a given amount of time. This usually occurs when you have a supply route and you will keep making return trips indefinitely. Haul a given number of resources in the shortest time possible. This usually happens when you are trading or want to go on a relatively small-scale resource expedition. For the first goal, you want to minimize the time spent on each pound of resource, so you can move as much as possible with the time you have. For the second goal, you are trying to minimize the total time spent, which is not always accomplished by moving the fastest at any given time. This is more complex. Let's look at each one individually: Hauling indefinite resources in a given amount of time: If you haul more at once, you move slower but get more across in one trip. If you haul less, you move faster but get fewer resources in one trip. We also have to consider that half of the time you are sailing, you are just bringing the empty ship back to the resource location. This means that the fixed weight of your ship makes a big difference in the optimal strategy. If your fixed weight is high, you should haul more cargo to avoid making many trips. If your fixed weight is low, you should haul less and move faster, since the wasted time on the return trip is quite small. Working through some of the math, I made some plots for the item transfer rate versus the loaded ship weight (with optimal cargo racks). Here they are, and we will discuss them after: It turns out that for 0 fixed weight, you should carry 12,530 lbs to be most efficient, and for 10,000 fixed weight, you should load up to 19,600 lbs. However, you can see from the 10k fixed weight graph that it may be possible to improve the efficiency further, since the cargo racks are optimized for speed, not item transfer rate. Specifically, adding the last cargo rack earlier would translate into extending the rightmost section of the graph further to the left, where it looks like it may reach a higher rate than this optimization allows. This is an area that can certainly be improved in the future. More unpacking: In general, you should load your ship up to about 50% of the way between the empty weight and the full weight to get the most efficient run. It can get better than that, but this will get you a majority of the way there, if you use your cargo racks optimally. Not much else to say here, that is the main rule-of-thumb of this section. Hauling a fixed amount of resources as quickly as possible: The goal here is just to minimize the time taken to get the resources back. Since speed drops off quickly as your ship fills up, the strategy will be to split the load up into equal-sized portions and take the same amount of weight each trip, so you avoid a few heavy/slow loads. Then, since every trip takes the same amount of time, we can just optimize each trip. However, the optimal weight HEAVILY depends on the amount of cargo you want to haul back. Look at the next graph (of optimal haul weights versus the target weight you wish to carry back), and let me know if you can make any sense of the chaos: One bit of information to be gleaned from this mess is what happens when you need to haul a LOT of cargo. The chaotic mess converges to the same number that we got for the case where we wanted to haul an indefinite amount of cargo at as fast a rate as possible. Here is a zoomed-out image of the same graph I just showed. Obviously this behavior is much more complex than the behavior when you just want to maximize the rate. Therefore, I suggest that you just follow the advice there and let this section be more of a curiosity than actual advice. I mean, if you want to calculate the optimal carry weight every time you want to haul cargo, be my guest Summary Here, I will just list a bunch of bullet points that summarize the findings throughout the rest of the guide: As weight increases, your ship speed will fall faster and faster. Therefore, you should aim to keep your ship at around 50% capacity as a rule of thumb. This balances the amount of cargo you are hauling with the speed decrease from the additional weight. Galleons are the fastest ship in the game, followed by schooners, and then brigantines, and sloops are the slowest. When you are putting sails on these ships, start with the largest possible sail and fill in smaller sails afterward, to get the fastest sail configuration. As a rule of thumb, add a cargo rack when you have 4,000 pounds of resources available to store in it, and always fill up any existing cargo racks as much as possible. The heavier your ship is without any cargo on board, the earlier you want to add cargo racks when filling up your ship. The perfectly optimal weight arrangement is very complicated, and depends on many factors. You can look through the rest of this post for more info, but just know that these rules-of-thumb may not always be suitable for your exact scenario, and you'll need to use a bit of common sense. Thank you for reading through this quite long guide. If you didn't understand a part of it (or any of it), I will be keeping up-to-date with the comments, so feel free to ask any questions there. If you have any ideas you want me to look into further, I am open to suggestions for another guide. If you liked this extremely thorough type of guide, please let me know, so I can be motivated to make more in the future.

I keep this thread open for your thoughts, but instead of splitting players with single player mode, huge company servers.. small company servers... private servers...Pve...Pvp..and one server for each of the 17 genders, it should be the goal to put them all in one massive online world, which is having diffrent regions with diffrent rules.

So is Atlas dev team outsourced ? seems like is a European firm as no responses on wtf is going on with the game, and all the bugs no responses to if its ever being looked at? As Europe is always on vacation this time of year

Not sure I can think of any reason that fast travel would be an issue in pve. In pvp I find it a problem. Why take the time to build a great ship if I can build a few decent ones and get back to the fight in a matter of minutes. What reward do I get if I sink someone and they get back with another ship or if i sink it as well what about the 3rd ship. I don't get time to dive to the bottom of the ocean and loot the ship I won the battle. No reward besides I spend all the time to make all the materials that I spent sinking the ship and then all the materials to repair and replace what I used. Oh I'm rewarded victory. Sorry no thanks. I think I deserve the loot from the ship I sink with out the hassle of them fast traveling back for a rematch right away. So I say no to fast travel in pvp. Could improvements be made for better sailing? Yes I think so but not fast travel. Just my thoughts.

I spent over 1k in this game. I liked it. But a lot of that was mindnumbingly boring sailing, half afk waiting for the boring breeding parts and fighting bugs left and right. It got less fun every time i logged, and somewhere last week i quit for good, the last of the group of real life friends who all did the same. Its just not fun in the end. Great potential, but totally wasted, and instead of trying to fix the core problem they focused on all the wrong stuff. I wish they would all play it for a week without any console commands.. from scratch. So much stuff would get fixed within that week....

As said before, give something more meaningfull at your destination, and the sail speed become secondary. Otherwise: If i only sail to pickup some tames, and i can plan my journey it takes 6min per grid. At this speed means you can go everywhere on the map in about 1 hour. Oc the ship is more then empty (~12% load)! The hardest part is sailing trough equatiorial where there is no space. I have a 3 122% handling sail (fighter) brig, which is fun to sail, not to slow, wider angle and turnability of a schooner and beyond. A good BP of this is a welcomed game changer. The speed sails BPs need a purpose asap. To fix sailspeed they can not easyly increase the max speed. When traveling with 21 knots, you can not reakt to SotD with a galleon, neighter correct a beaching course other then spam x. Going fullspeed is taxing. Also avoiding other player ships can be hard (not that it matters in PVE). You might deload while laoding an island. I would like to have (speed) sails have a higher efficacy for lower wind senario. Like atm speed at lowest wind is 0.57 times highest wind (not storm). How about making speed sails to bring it to ~0.75 or even higher? That would be 16.35 knots instead of 12,4 knots for a 21,8 knots topspeed galleon. Kinda reasonable.

*blinks* Yeah no, not likely to forget that. Boomer’s therapy paradox: It is difficult to forget anything you are paying a therapist $150 per hour to cope with the flashbacks of, as the bill itself will tend to trigger more flashbacks. Atlas launch week. Oh the horror. *shudders*

I also agree with 8Ball, The game is EA, its working progress, its going to turn into something amazing. However I also agree with the OP. The Devs really need to play the game like we do, to really understand its issues. You have to admit - Atlas is improving... Who doesn't remember day 1 with all player corpses @ the freeport. The struggle alone just to get off the island..

Still love the bookshelf because I can remember what it was like without them - awful. +1 to the idea that maps decay more slowly on them though. Getting something (besides your belt) that preserves them for 7 days would mean that you can harvest all week and binge them on a weekend.

Funny issue. I have 2 on ship 1 for maps 1 for blueprints at my base i have special room for 10 bookshelves so like mythical ship stuff, weapons bla bla. So i think bookshelves are totally fine

I will third this because I see a lot of erosion of the player base on EU PVE. People that have played a lot are walking away from the game. I have played for the last 2 days at my normal time and been the only one in my grid at L9. Normally there would be about 7 or 8. What really made me scratch my head concerning management though is when Dollie said this in our “Don’t Raze Us” thread: Im a little confused on one specific aspect in relation to PvE brought up by a couple of posters though. I've seen examples of an island owner leaving or going awol and thus leaving settlers open to being wiped. Wouldn't those settlers just continue to pay the upkeep on the claim to keep it secure in that case? (aside from waiting to jump and claim it themselves of course). I'm not quite understanding how people can just "lose" a claim. With all due respect to those running the show, why do players need to explain this? Are there so many moving parts in a game like this that it is difficult to grasp them all or do they just need to play more as Boomer said? Usually the architect of a game understands the implications of rule changes or at least what game mechanics are working. Oh well, it is what it is. None of the answers really matter anyway because 1) early access and 2) I definitely got my monies worth out of Atlas. But I so hate lost potential of something that could be great.

Reply from Voodoo: "Any ships that have not had their anchors raised within a 3 week period will be automatically deleted by the server. This is to help keep the server clean and reduce lag. Any ships you wish to keep, make sure to man the wheel, raise and lower the anchor (at the very least) before 3 weeks has passed since the last time you've done so." (emphasis mine) That is one possible reason that the ship could've been removed but this pre-alpha game has more bugs than the average Australian city. We have literally dozens of ships in our company. I want to know *which* ships went pop and *why*. Was the it auto-decay? If I know the name of the ship and I know that I was on it 2 days ago then I can report a bug. Was it a different process? Sinking can also result in the removed message. We recently had a fully-anchored galleon sink w/o any sink message. Just a "removed from the company". Yes, we all know what's *supposed* to happen but what's *supposed* to happen and what *actually* happens are two different things. With such utterly appalling logging, it's going to take much longer to track down and fix faults. Oh, that's right. Fixing faults isn't their priority. They're working on performance, cosmetics and more useless tames for this game that totally isn't Ark.

As I mentioned in the beginning of the post, I intentionally avoided discussion of weight sails (or handling sails, sail quality, etc.), to help keep the discussion focused somewhat. I do plan on making a guide in the future discussing all 3 types of sails together. Keep an eye out, it's coming soon!

If you mean, create a smaller map that is a 3x3 (or whatever you want)? The answer is: yes. I have used the map/grid creator to make a new map (which is fun), but I'm not sure how to get the map installed once I have made it for single player. If anyone has a guide or answers I'm sure many would appreciate the information!

They weren’t joking either. When I first started playing Conan is was like a deja vu experience. Then I envisioned two very complex puzzles just coming together and fitting perfectly. it was a good experience but disappointing at the same time because they could have easily borrowed things from the other. either way they were both good games and I know atlas can be as well. They have to learn from mistakes though or there is no hope.

My head is spinning!!! Conan lacks content.... But the fact you are posting here on the atlas forums "Imply's that Atlas has more content?" At this point I am definitely confused as Conan has far more content then Atlas in my mind....

Yeah Conan does any awesome job with their building. The ability to raise and lower foundations I completely awesome. They really need that. That is what I was telling the other guy. Raising and lowering foundations was a god send in Conan. Plus Conan had plenty of decorations as well. It is good to learn from other games that have gotten it right

Have never played Ark! Nor will I ever.... If its improved since Ark then it must be pretty crap in Ark!!! Many games do building far better then Atlas... 7 days to die Conan Empyrion Rust Just to name a few off the top of my head.... Lets stop making excuses for poor execution and start demanding results! Seriously who cares if its better then Ark, that's like telling the Gym Teachers who expects you to do 8 Pull ups and you do 3 that hey you only could do 2 Pull ups the last time you tested....
  33. 1 point
All they have to do is learn from Conan as far as their building goes. We are talking straight up. lowering and raising foundations will save everyone sooooo much time. Really shouldn’t be that difficult

Most people that play solo / in tiny groups are the ones that lose out in big open persistent worlds. Everyone's enjoying Atlas against their own wish and rule sets, but in big open play, it's easy to get sucked into a vortex of persistently changing rules and goalposts. By bringing in solo / personal server based game options, more and more people will be able to play atlas they way they want to. If you have no time to play, but find 2x weekends the only viable time to play, then the new mode will be ideal. Some people want 0.5x some people feel that farming shouldn't be the aim of the game, but have 10x so that building a boat is trivial, but perhaps prefer PvE fun with no overhead.. ofc single and solo eliminates the spam, player mess and griefing as well. For me, being a sailor / survivor with and entire grid to myself is an adventure of a lifetime. Me vs a world to call home. Sea is a lonely place, i can finally have my house boat and play rules that suit me. I'm very luckly, the dev team just made Atlas exactly what I want it to be. I emphase the I. I now have my very own Atlas world, and a fantastic place it is. I have to exercise discipline with the settings now, so that I don't make things too easy, or, I get frustrated with the difficulty. If I don't enjoy Atlas now, then I don't deserve Atlas. I love it, settings and mods bring new life, and I'm grateful to the dev team for bringing this to me. @Jatheish @Dollie and team, you're awesome.

I get it, you did single player for the snowflakes so they can enter admin commands and feel like they can actually play. But now you have to realize your debt to society has been payed , and you need to stop listening to all the calls for pink bows and ribbons and the fact that these people are trying to take over. Remember the fact that is a pirate based game and things are supposed to be difficult, hard to earn, and maybe even have a sense of gratification in the end. If this confuses you or you are unsure of what direction to turn just Google pirate. I am not after realism, as much as I am just having something fun to do, and what the heck if I go out and get a bunch of doubloons I should be able to spend them how I see fit. You used to be able to tax someone off an island but no, you got stomped down because you were "oppressing the masses". Now they are crying to turn the whole damn place into a homeless encampment. Here is the clue, and if you think really hard you know how it works, people will pay more taxes if they want to stay on an island that I pay gold for. Just a simple example. You made wildlife suck, there is literally nothing to be afraid of, why? Because more snowflakes crying because they died. OMG I died in a survival game WTF!!! Stupid posts about locked content, I could elaborate but these are the same freeloaders I already spoke of. How much gold for that pink ribbon on your bear? I will honestly say you guys have done a great job on a lot of things. You took a huge list of things people did not like on ARK and changed them. Great, but if they made everything on ARK as freaking boring and en eventful on PVE it would have tanked a long time ago. M.A.G.A Make Atlas Great Again
