I know this is going to sound like im whining here, but the claim system is broken. Anyone who did not get to any island within the first 24 hours of game release are screwed unless they intend to join a massive company. I get this game is MMO, so a certain lvl of competitiveness is a requirement. But the ability to claim an ungodly amount of land is too much. Every character should get 1-2 land claim flags. That way the larger companies still have the ability to claim an entire island. But people with a company of 5 or 6 would only be able to claim small islands, or partial islands. I feel that this would actually increase the competitiveness. Companies who share an island would either have to be allies or continuously watch their back. I dont agree with everyone saying that claims sould have upkeep, thats just a pipe dream. Not to mention if you have a life other than gaming, you are screwed. This game is currently designed for the large streaming masses who have huge companies, and nothing but time to play games. I've been playing with my company of 10 since release, but we have not once claimed any land or built anything bigger than a sloop simply because lawless islands are full of chineese griefers and the rest of the map is preclaimed by the super companies. I feel that the amount of land you can claim should be a reflection of how many people are in your company. More players=More land. I know the Devs will probably never see this but let me know if im being unreasonable here. Does anyone else see this or is it just me?

claim flag Invulnerability within claimed circle
TheSzerdi posted a topic in Feedback and Suggestions
Before you freak out, read the whole idea. First, make all claim flags require a resource upkeep. Second, make that upkeep exponential based on the number of claim flags a company holds. (First flag is 50 wood and 50 fiber per week. By the fifth flag ALL flags require 200 wood, 200 fiber, 200 stone, and 200 berries from the biome type it is planted in per week. By the twentieth flag ALL flags require 1000 wood, 1000 fiber, 1000 stone, 300 metal, 500 berries of biome type, and 200 berries of each of the OTHER biome types per week. Change the flag models to increasingly extravagant structures as higher tier is reached. Maybe every five flags. Exact numbers will be need to be balanced.) Third, make all structures and anchored ships within the claim zone invulnerable so long as upkeep is being met. If upkeep is not met, fast decay times like lawless zones set in. (A pick lock feature to allow some raiding perhaps? Make characters unable to pick locks within 5 meters of a sleeping character?) Fourth, an opposing group's counter claim is a destroyable structure that will continue claiming regardless of ANY nearby players until it is destroyed. Make it require resources to build and make the claim timer much longer. Ships and structures lose invulnerability when the owner clan damages the counter claim structure. (This will need balancing to find best values. Like 500 wood, 500 stone, 200 hides, 120 cooked meat, and a four hour timer. It's a siege after all.) Please respond with refinements that would help balance or avoid exploits. I can't think of everything. Perhaps restricting counter claims to particular days of the week? Like odd numbered grid squares Thursdays and Saturdays, even numbers on Fridays and Sundays, Mondays through Wednesdays only areas that have failed upkeep can be counter claimed. I would prefer counter claims anywhere, anytime, but tiny groups might not agree. -
Ok me and my friend did some testing today about claiming flags. I've left company and tried to take over his flags. And guess what? I could instnatly, without 72 hours waiting, place my flags and start claiming his when he left to another area. What i could not take over were my 2 flags (which were placed before entering company, but after leaving it they stayed in company ownership). These are my only 2 flags in whole game and when i tried to place claim near them i recived info about recent upkeep, it was in seconds and was -18600 and it was rising to higher negative values (maybe it'll "rise" to negative value which corresponds to 72 hours). My friend placed a lot more flags and almost all of them had no upkeep, so i could instantly start claiming them. But there were also 2 of his flags that i couldn't take over. Those were flags that he placed as last ones. Mu guess: This looks like limit of 2 plags per character is on and only last 2 flags placed are protected by 72 hours upkeep. Any new flag placed removes upkeep from previous flags, so that only 2 flags can be protected by upkeep.

The PVE clam stealing should be fixed ASAP. We don't even dare leaving main base without at least 1 person sleeping inside the base because of the crap trollers that try to steal the claim with the whole base on it. On PVE this is horrible to even think of. Somebody being able to steal all you worked for in 30 mins. Also, as another bug, on the island where we are, resources are no longer spawning (trees, rocks, etc). This started happening about 2 days ago. It was fine until then. We now have a large island with no trees on it that won't even respawn. There are 10 people on this island playing (more or less) that might keep the area rendered, so this should be fixed by NOT ALLOWING online chars to prevent resource spawning.

*message in a bottle* So you stole a few coin, punched a few monkeys, and managed to slap a few planks together and sail off a freeport... Only to realize the outer sea is unwelcoming and will sink your dreams of being a pirate. The lands run dry of resource, the PvP sea is controlled by big name streamers, YOU CAN'T SPECIALIZE IN BEING THE BEST DAMN PIRATE DANCER IN THE FLAT ATLAS SEA!! Not all is lost.. -Undead Marauders- has a home, for you. You need a place outside a freeport to call home. Where land cannot be claimed or taken from you. You want time to make your ship and produce 500 gallons of rum. K12, NA, PvP, is where you need to set sail. Seek out the Undead Marauders. A plan is brewing in the Lawless islands. You should be a part of it. ~ I feel a change in the wind, says I.. Seek out the flag.

Does anyone know how claims actually work? Someone was able to claim my stone box as I was running my sloop to a free-port in 10 minutes. The other day to see how it would work I did it to another players stone box. The timer was 10 minutes but it was froze at 9:59 and would not work. Does it have something to do with the player being offline or online? Is 10 minutes intended or is that a bug? Why raid bases or make explosives if you can just wait 10 minutes and open the door? Wouldn't it be easier to just build in a lawless zone even with the decay time if that was the case?

The land claiming in PVE , needs to be changed . If you were late or new player , its really hard to get any land cause every place is taken over and i mean by 1 player thats placed flags all over the island. You ask for land they either dont respond or reject you. Even if they will not build on it others cant have it . And now with the flag defence by only running into the take over area you can defend it people are even worse. Heck only reason i managed to get any land was cause i went for the farthest and smallest island on a grid and even that was all claimed with 0 buildings on it. And why i got it was cause it took the guy 1 hr to travel to it from another island , they had claimed the whole server with only 3 players amd even then came to "defend" the land . Anyways there need to be like 1-2 claiming flags per player at least on the PVE servers cause this is just getting really stupid. And its not only me most times i travel through a grid people are comlaining about it.

Instead of being able to place claim flags, make the devs choose permanent locations on each island. This way they are spaced apart nicely. Every company can come claim 1 flag. Also reduce it's range. To claim a flag you must place a sort of box next to it and put materials in this. The company that fed the most materials to the required amount gets the flag. You can build around your box now and protect it. Once another company comes and tries to claim your flag, they degrade the materials in your "base box". Once these are depleted, they get the base. This can take up to 10 hours depending on how many materials are in your base box. They can of course also break your door and forcefully empty the box / press claim on the box. It should be protected and once you hit it , you can claim it. (maybe with a 5 minute wait time to avoid griefing). This way, flag spam is gone, bases dont get claimed in 30 minutes and uselessly claimed flags can be taken back easily if they are not being defended. Opening the map to lots of new players.

On NA PVE i just had a dude come right up to my base, while i was in it and place a contest flag. I kindly told him to stop claiming and he did. We had a little chat about it, and it turns out he is able to claim things even while people are in their base. He also told me he had just seen a guy placing a flag on an already contested area, making it double contested. What is going on? Im afraid to log out right now.

From what I understand WildCard had a significant hand in making this game or at least advised. We see the same things that happened on ARK's launch PvE servers occurring now, but instead of wooden pillars beings dropped they are simply textured as claim flags. With no limitations on area control, the game will stagnate almost immediately as greedy groups grab up more land than is reasonable. The game will then slowly decay and push people into private servers, destroying the "MMO" aspect of the game. When new servers get launched there will be a spike in activity for the new land, resulting in the exact same cycle. Its great business for companies that run private servers at least. I guess I'm just disappointed nothing was learned from past experience.

I just made a raft and sailed out in hopes to find a place of settlement, instead I find every island spammed with flags and there is no point to contest because there are like almost 100 flags everywhere even claiming the ocean. This is insane, well I guess this is what happens when you have 40,000 people on a server. For new sailors out there we cant find any place to stay and there are no open islands. And what is the point to contest land when they have their structures and beds there. They will just claim it back. I hope something gets done about this like the limited number of flags you can place. Also resources aren't respawning. I spent 9 hours looking for a place to live to no avail, overall im just disappointed.

Claim stealing and how it works presents a big problem in PVE atm people can lose everything in an hour and a half stealing territory from another company even less for boats which gets annoying pvp should be enabled against those claim stealing, a system so even if one is offline they dont get wrecked, boats shouldnt be claimable in PVE or some system that makes it inline with the idea of PVE while still giving new players a chance to acquire land without having to join a mega company.
