  1. Let's see, wildly unbalanced game mechanics, constant crashes, constantly having to restart or rebuild due to one or all of those things, and a generally frustrating experience? After doing some exploring I found there's also a great deal of disparity in the level of difficulty in starting areas and islands in general with a complete lack of information that might tip a new player off regarding that. I had the misfortune to pick a particularly predator-filled Lawless region as my starting region and died about a thousand times, losing everything each time I did because haha! beds don't work in Lawless regions and I'd get sent to a random island far far away with no way to retrieve my corpse. So maybe things like that might cause some hate? I understand how it might be baffling if you happened to make lucky choices and are one of those who doesn't experience a lot of issues. Trust me though, I've been around and seen islands that would have made things a cakewalk to start on or stake a claim on and others that were the things of nightmares. There was no apparent attempt made to balance the experience the islands provide, from available resources to the plants and creatures that spawn on them. I found one island that was all peaceful creatures, all the time. No agro predators at all. The island my company has a claim on though is 99% predators all the time. You can't go for more than a minute in any direction without attracting the attention of multiple crocs and/or snakes. And god forbid if you walk away from a fight injured or fall unconscious because then you get swarmed by vultures. Haha, so fun right?! Oh and then there are the house eating alpha versions of those creatures, destroying everything you built and killing you repeatedly with one hit if you try and stop them. Why all the hate?
  2. It sounds like you're asking what's the bare minimum cannons you can have and still win against Damned Ships right? Well, you could get away with 5 total, just put them all on one side. I wouldn't try more than 1 on 1 like that though. 4 per side would be the lowest I would go personally for normal cannons. Large cannons maybe 3 per side since they hit harder and have a longer range.
  3. I wouldn't waste my breath arguing with the "I want hardmode for everybody!" players, they're convinced that video games are serious business and making things tedious or obnoxious is somehow impressive and challenging. It must be nice to have all the time in the world to play games but some of us don't have that luxury. What the devs really need to do is make a hardmode server where they can all go and congratulate themselves on how great they are at hardmode and the rest of us can have a fun game we can play when we have the time.
  4. No, ballistas are the opposite of cheaper, they're obnoxiously high in alloy costs to the point where I'm sure it must have been a type-o. TBH I'm not sure why ballistas use alloy at all, they should use plain old metal and not even that much.
  5. I haven't used them vs the damned but my experience with them and other artillery lead me to believe cannons are one of the better options and large cannons are probably the best as long as you can maneuver to keep them on target. Ballistas would be my 2nd to last choice with catapults being the last due to the incredibly slow nature of their projectile. I've used cannons against the damned successfully, and large cannons have what looks to be about double the range and substantial damage.
  6. Well, you can pirate Damned Ships. But yeah, I'd rather fight normal ships, we could use some normal NPC civilian ships to fight and possibly commandeer.
  7. It wouldn't make a good replacement for cannons but might work OK as a supplement. They work decent enough as base defense though aiming them takes getting used to. They arc quite a bit so it's tricky to predict how to lead a moving target, but they pack a solid punch against living targets if you manage to hit them. They have one of the highest, if not the highest alloy cost of any artillery piece for whatever bizarre reason, (because ballistas are mostly made of wood IRL), so I can't imagine placing a substantial number on a ship. Maybe a couple for killing enemy crew or sea monsters.
  8. I joined a PVE server for a reason, and that's because I didn't want PVP. This would be a terrible change and I'm glad there's no truth to it because Lawless zones are everywhere and there's no way to get to or from Freeports without going through a Lawless region. It'd also allow experienced players to grief new players leaving Freeports. So yeah, all around a bad idea.
  9. Yeah, I agree, the SFX need work, and the constant moaning and groaning are unnecessary, we don't need audio reminders every fraction of a second. We get it, you're hungry/thirsty/swinging an ax or whatever. No need to be an obnoxious drama queen about it.
  10. While I 100% agree with you the predators in this game are stupidly broken, but taking them out completely? I'm opposed to that. They just need to put some time in stopping them from ignoring walls/barriers/the sides of ships. And maybe having the game check and see what the current population is before spawning more would be nice, and have them all stop being friends. The croc/snake/wolf/bee combo hunting packs are absurd on so many levels.
  11. I agree these are good changes for people like me that can't play Atlas all day long every day. Of course, it's easy-mode with 40 people, what game wouldn't be? Try this game solo or with one other person, and trust me, it stops being easy mode real quick. That said, I wouldn't be opposed to them creating a server with ramped up difficulty for people who are into that sort of thing. The smart move for the devs is to cater to as many different types of gamers as they can, so they're probably going to need more than just a couple simply PVE and PVP servers. And maybe they'll go that route in the future.
  12. I disagree with pretty much everything you just said. It's supposed to be a game, and games are supposed to be fun as well as challenging. More grinding chores for days on end =/= challenge. Plus some of us have jobs and want to sleep sometimes. Calling this instant gratification is hyperbole.
  13. Well I know NPC crews will kinda just teleport onto anything bigger than a raft when you board, maybe tamed animals set to follow will too? Give it a shot, it couldn't hurt unless your ship can't support their weight, then you might be in trouble. On a side note, one NPC crew will usually be able to get on board a raft, anything past that and they just kinda swim around it and/or under it.
  14. Did you try giving them ammo as well? I'm just guessing here because you could fill volumes with the lack of information on how certain game mechanics are supposed to work in this game. I am 100% certain that you can equip spears with the context menu, though, and they will use them in combat. I've done it myself. Maybe all they can use are melee weapons, idk for sure. That would be sad if that's the case.
  15. You should be able to by placing the gun in their inventory, right-click on it for the context menu and select equip. Yeah, it's a bit unintuitive, but that works with spears so no reason it shouldn't work with guns too. Why there isn't a weapon slot on their paper doll GUI is another question though. Don't ask me if they need or use ammo, because I have no idea. My adventures with crewmembers have been rather shortlived.
  16. You do get that everyone that leaves is taking money away from the future development of this and/or any other game by this company right? And people that leave because they're fed up probably know people, and they'll quite possibly tell those people not to buy this game either, which compounds that issue, right? So if you like this game like you say you do, isn't a thread like this self-defeating? If the devs are smart they'll do everything they can to keep people from leaving. If they don't, this game won't live long enough to get out of EA.
  17. Or they could add a 15 minute lockout after 3 failed attempts, then it goes from seconds to hours and hours, unless they get lucky because the person set a silly easy code. Such a simple fix.
  18. Everyone knows wolves, lions, crocs, and snakes all team up to hunt humans or anything else IRL, where have you been?!? For predators it's always happy fun get along time with every other predator in the world. In other words, yes, this is one more thing in a long list of absurdities regarding the predators in this game. More than half the predators in the world wouldn't even work with members of their own species, and would just as likely attack each other as anything else. I know it's a fantasy game but it still should have some basis on reality.
  19. I have to admit I don't know why you can't craft them. If they want to sell special ones at a vendor go right ahead, but if I can build an entire ship, cannons and all, I'm pretty sure making a figurehead would be well within my capabilities.
  20. I haven't even had to deal with this and I agree. This is utter nonsense. If baby animals required that much micromanagement IRL there'd be no animals left on this planet. Most of them just require food, water, maybe shelter, and protection. Go outside once in a while, devs, or watch National Geographic or something. How out of touch with reality can you be?
  21. I agree, on land wolves and lions are the most broken hostiles there are. You can't outrun them, you can't outfight them, the only thing you can do if you're lucky and spot them from a distance is shoot them, and even that's not a guarantee you'll survive. Let's face it though, all the hostiles are broken in some way or another. Crocs and Giant Snakes can attack through walls/foundations/sides of boats, and crocs are damn near invincible if they're in the water and you're swimming or on a raft or a sloop. I know there can sometimes be a fine line between challenging and too easy, but these creatures are so far past that line they can't even see it anymore. They're obnoxious, unrealistically powerful, and absolutely no fun to deal with.
  22. Nah I was in the same sector as my base/claimed territory. I didn't think ships could be stolen on PVE, are you sure that's a thing?
  23. The only thing the log says is Ship -259350847 was removed from the Company! No reason why. So this is either a bug, or I'm going to have to give up on this game already because I can't have a ship in the game and do real life stuff like work and get sleep and do normal things without logging on to a missing ship and/or anything else, it's not worth wasting my time any more. Let me know whether I need to uninstall or not, thanks!
