    Captain's Log 23: Setting A Course

    Ahoy Pathfinders!

We’ve seen some interesting action over the past week whilst Anarchy rules! Players have found imaginative ways to entertain themselves within this no holds barred meta whilst we gather useful data for the future. Meanwhile, the team has had in-depth discussions regarding the upcoming patch, with some specific focus on claim and war systems. There will be some adjustments to our previously announced plans and this Captain’s Log will outline the details that have emerged during this process. The specifics will be honed and adapted as we approach the PTR as well as the launch of these new systems.

         :anchor: Setting a course :anchor:

    March Mega Patch Update!

    large.March_Milestone_8.png

If you didn't have a chance to read our previous Captain's Log, please do so as it covers a lot of information regarding our massive update coming later this month, and will add some clarity to the changes we discuss below.

    General Claim Changes

We’ll be making some general changes to the system which will impact both PvE and PvP servers:

    • The boat decay system will be enabled. This means that there will be a tagging system attached to boats which will cause them to self destruct after multiple weeks of inactivity on PvE, Golden Age Ruin, and Freeport servers. To tag a boat, the owner of that boat (single player or company) will just need to enter its stasis/render distance.
    • Claim owners will be able to demolish structures (via the pinwheel) on their settlements temporarily as long as the structure has been placed within the last 12 hours. After the 12 hour period has passed, they will not be able to demolish the structures using the pinwheel, and must manually destroy it. Claim owners can do this outside of raid hours or warlike. This exists as an anti-griefing mechanism. On PvE servers, we may extend the time beyond 12 hours as players will not have the option to destroy via PVP.
    • There will be a notice sent to the Settlement Owner’s Company and also via a cross-server notification pop-up when new players/companies are building on their territory. Players will have the option to subscribe to this Company Log via email or Discord, similarly to other Company Log messages.

    PvE Claim Changes

We received an extensive amount of feedback from the PvE community regarding our upcoming changes. The overwhelmingly clear message was a desire to retain some form of a claiming system.

One aspect of the design we intend to stick to is the fact we want players to always have an option to build, otherwise, the game cannot be truly experienced in its current state. We understand that there are some concerns regarding how that could potentially be exploited in a PvE environment, and we’ll be working on designs and systems to ensure that isn’t the case from a technical point of view, as well as through GM involvement.

With the Mega March update, the claim systems on PvE will change from being lawless-esque servers to the following:

Use the same claim system as PvP, but remove the raidable hours and war aspect. This means that players will be able to claim islands, and anyone can build on those settlements. Each settlement will have an upkeep cost which is based on a variety of factors such as the islands ranking, the number of settlements that company has, and how many different companies are building on the settlement. Settlement owners will be able to set a tax rate, and also players will be able to place their player run shops on the claimed land.

However, we are planning some PvE specific changes

    • We’ll be imposing a hard limit of Claim Points equivalent to one small island for single players.
    • Companies will be able to own multiple settlements, but there will be a hard limit (lower than PvP) and it will be based on Island Points and the number of players who are currently in that company. This means that larger companies will have access to more ‘Claim Points’ and are therefore able to settle on more islands with higher rankings, however, we will still be imposing a relatively low cap.
    • Company alliances will no longer be enabled on PvE servers. We understand that there are some legitimate use cases, however, in this sandbox environment, we believe they will primarily be used to game the system and get past company rules/limitations. We recognize that this may impact how trading communication takes place on PvE servers and we are looking into an alternative option for players.

    PvP Claim Changes

We’ll also be adding some new options along with changing how cannons are used during raidable/wartime hours.

    • Give claim owners the option to enable allied companies to build cannons on their lands
    • Give company owners the option to allow allies to use their cannon (governance setting)
    • Enable an activation timer on cannon structures placed by non-allied companies during wartime and raidable hours to prevent instant FoBs. Similarly to battery-powered heavy turret activation timer on ARK.
    • Delay on joining a new company or alliance after leaving one (24 hours)
    • Company owners and admins can now set other companies as neutral. This is done via the in-game pinwheel, similarly to alliances when targeting another company’s structure or player. Companies which are marked as neutral will have a different colour display HUD, as a way for players to indicate they are non-hostile, however, they will not have other benefits which the alliance system would provide. In summary, there will now be three states in which other companies can appear: ally/neutral/enemy.

We acknowledge that there has been a lot of feedback regarding alliance limitations and how they impact mid-sized companies along with the role they play when sharing territory. This is something we are currently discussing and we may have an update for you closer to the time of the patch.

Player to Player Secure Trading System

This update will also include our first phase of the Player to Player secure trading system! We regard this is an important aspect of the game, alongside our Player ran shops, which you’ll be able to experience later this month on the PTR!

    large.ATLAS_Shipwreck.png

    Procedurally Generated Shipwrecks

The March Mega update will also be introducing a new environment objective for players to explore whilst out at sea! Procedurally generated shipwrecks exist as a new source to loot for items and blueprints. You’ll be able to find them randomly populating throughout the sea floor, with a higher density present around the underwater trench. You can find them by diving deep into the ocean or looking out for their visual indicator on the surface of the water, or successfully completing the sextant mini-game which will point you in the direction of nearby shipwrecks (procedurally generated or player-made).

We’ll have various types with their own unique looks. Players will need to swim into them to locate the chest to loot, which will vary based on the shipwreck.

The structural pieces (planks) will not be able to be harvested, and the submarine can just directly attack the shipwreck to harvest the loot. Once the chest inside the wreck has been activated, it will begin a timer which will destroy the wreck, additionally, looting it entirely will also cause the wreck to be destroyed.

Please keep in mind that this will be our initial implementation for these procedurally generated shipwrecks and we’ll be expanding on them in a future update, as well as introducing more PvE content for players to explore and experience.

    Public Test Realm (Test Live)

This update, including the war system and claim changes, will be making its way to our Public Test Realm before it hits the entire Official Network and will be accessible for all players for both PvP and PvE. It is anticipated that Test Live will be available to play around the 20th of March and we will keep you posted should there be any more updates as the time approaches.

We appreciate all of the feedback you’ve shared regarding the update and will continue to work on improving the systems, and the game by incorporating aspects of that feedback into our existing developmental pipelines as well as our vision for the game!

    Upcoming Major Version

We’ll also be releasing a major version update on the 8th of March, which will contain a massive overhaul to the way items are replicated on our networks. This should result in a considerable performance gain and reduction in bandwidth on servers, and due to the scale and necessity of the changes, a major update will be required.

    large_Peg1.gif

Additionally, we will be rolling out the Peg Leg and Hook Hand cosmetics which can be acquired at your nearest Freeport!

    large_Hook.gif

    Dynamic ATLAS Maps

Our roundup of the Dynamic ATLAS Maps will be on a temporary hiatus due to the current Anarchy patch and the fact we have announced the wipe. It will be making a return when the ATLAS relaunches with the new claim and war system.

    I say either

    A:  Limit flags per person

B:  make everything lawless with increased decay time

😄 Implement predetermined plots or a grid if you will. You can build only in a plot you except as yours. That way there is no ovoverlapping. Make a large plot on coast lines for a main base and smaller plots inland for taming or outpost. And limit the number of plots owned. 1 large 4 small or 2 large 1 small or how ever you wanna do it.

Similiar to a flag system but not over lapping at all..

    Bottom line........

Limit the amount of land a person can claim

If the devs said the wipe was going to happen on 20th March there's no guarantee it will, you might take a week off, but before the 20th March it gets delayed a week, resulting in possibly you not being able to cancel or rearrange your leave. It has happened to many many players before, and the devs themselves have told people they shouldn't take leave based on the ETA dates.

Completely up to you what you do, but if GS came here now and said official wipe is on 27th March, a week after PTR, and you book leave and then wipe gets pushed back a week, and you end up having nothing to do for a week, then you'd have to accept that and take full responsibility. So, just be cautious of any date given to you.

Threepwood nails it.  Any date the devs set must necessarily be tentative.  That is logical if they intend to give us a chance to give them feedback from the PTR, and to give their own programmers a chance to dig into the mechanics of productive change.  Also keep in mind that any change deployed on the PTR for testing might create further snarls which need a comb-through, so giving a hard deadline for the deployment of the massive patch would be disservice to the playerbase and themselves.  Wish I could "Make It So" with the hard ETA but...Image result for make it so

Probably another player that just got the game at most a week ago and can't find land.  It took me almost a week to find land and as long as you're not a douche your neighbors will probably let you join them and then you won't have to be a solo player because power stones and the Kraken are absolutely impossible by yourself. I've been to so many Lawless Islands and see Foundation spamming and all that great stuff and if the whole map is Lawless especially in PVE i just dont see finding an island to settle without having to move because of a single tool that griefs the whole island. But i just wish they would put a little more detail with their updates.

Actually...  I got it at launch, waited through the streamer getting to play first, the epic lag, no land, grief sinking, not being able to log in, the SotD over spawn with machine gun cannons, and still put in a couple hundred hours before I said "fuck it"...

I'm just completely against the idea of land grab vs a real pirate ship battle game.

The best pirates were the ones who appropriated silver without firing a shot, from what I'm reading.   I'm including stories of Howell Davis, Charles Vane, Henry Jennings, Calico Jack and Blackbeard amongst others.  So battles were not de rigueur.  You could be a great pirate without one.  In fact, there really are such things as land pirates but they usually work for local and state governments and invoke eminent domain laws as their weapons of choice.  Different battle arena, involves taking what is not rightfully yours.  Piracy is piracy.

Atlas seems to have melded the two arenas for their game.  I guess it all depends on which kind of booty you want to grab.

I've found it pretty funny reading through these 10 pages of "announcements". I see a lot of crying, a ton of ideas, but most of all...lots of wondering. I can tell you all one thing for certain. Any date that these devs set for ANY particular patch or update will not be accurate...it will be late. I won't bash them since i have no fuckin clue how to make a video game, but I am also pretty damn positive that they aren't the brightest stars in the sky. That said, just sit back and relax and just hope that they do a good job. I personally had a ton of fun since launch day/week (which was late, and an absolute disaster) and i'm excited to play the PTR once released. The day they announced the wipe tho, live on stream, was terrible. I put a lot of time into the game and lost a lot. I was just about to hit lvl 90, beat the Kraken, tamed a few lvl 29 razortooths and countless shieldhorns, had one of the best brigs on the entire NA PvP server, mythic weapons and armor, and most importantly...i rolled with a major company where i met a bunch of good peeps. I'll have to re-do all of that but to be honest, as long as the devs fix the bugs and continue to evolve....SouthSide Chicago is going to be online, slayin fools.

Yeah i explored the past few weekends before the wipe announcement. After you build all the ship types and weapons and armor of high quality blue prints, exploring is really all there is to do if you cant get enough people to do the powerstone quest. Rather than a wipe id rather see them lower the level of the golden age ruin enemies. I mean why cant it be like most games where they equal your current level.

The devs have repeatedly said otherwise...

    Example: https://steamcommunity.com/app/834910/discussions/0/1742230617609616394/?ctp=4#c1742230617611844643

This really is a tired argument that literally has zero proof to substantiate yet people like the quoted poster continue to scream it ad nauseum praying to the Atlas gods it will somehow become true and pretending they are informed when they are quite obviously not.

well if u have any idea of the game mechanics it is more than obvious that this game is not made for soloplayers. If you don't see that.. then put in the word of your choice here..

the "proof" you posted is against ZERGS, which does not mean a group of people, it means a massive amount of people...

it's still not made for soloplayer.

So nice proof, nice argument... stop discredit other people, you are obviously not informed.

You mean like the boosted rates?

    Or the reduced claim times?

Or maybe you're referring to the nerfs across the board on everything from tames to SotD?

Or maybe you think the devs are joking when they say the game is for solo players too?

Now...   Could you be a bit more specific about said game mechanics?

They've been explicit about making the game playable for solo as well as group players.  It is obvious that is  their intent.  So if it's not as solo-friendly as it could be, they will be amending it.

Our company is fine trying which ever in PvE.

Only have one request/suggestion:   Don't take our flags away 🙂

Either put them on these banks or let us build flagpoles and allow us to fly our colors in our bases.  It would also be nice to add our company flag to the top of our sail masts .

The developers statement is "We'll be making some design changes over the months ahead to make the game more accessible for smaller groups and solo players"

The key words are "more accessible".  It doesn't mean solo players will be able to do power stones or the Kraken.  It doesn't mean that every solo player will be able to claim land.  It means that solo players will be able to log in, build ships and bases, explore, do treasure maps.  Accessible does not mean being able to do everything a group can do.

I think from their statements, they are misinterpreting what players want.  From the Captain's Log 22: "Players not being able to find land to build a base on both PvP and PvE".  From Captain's Log 23: "we want players to always have an option to build".  Their emphasis is having players be able to build, and from their standpoint, the new system(s) they proposed allow this.  What they are misinterpreting is that players don't want to just build, they want to be able to claim.  They want a piece of land that is all their own.

they always stated it's for large companies. If you don't wanna accept that then don't try to argument against it. " to make the game more accessible for smaller groups and solo players " doesn't mean its made for soloplayer. They just want those people not give up for obviously reasons. login play the game, you will find out yourself if you watch it from a 3rd perspective. I'm too tired to explain the game mechanics.

Its annoying as its so very simple .. all islands lawless - maximum claims per size of company 1- 5 man = 2 ------ 6 - 10 = 5 ------- 11- 20 = 10 -------- 21- 35 = 15 ------- 35 - 50 = 20 -------- upwards of 50 = 25 claims - each claim is by planting a foundation, this stipulates a radius within which to build and no one else can build within. Building decay over 7 days once timed out demolishable. Foundation claims can be bought and sold. (see below for why.) Each island has a stipulated number of claims - if you want to own an island you need ALL the island claims.

Additionally later (something along these lines) --

Building must include the ability to make a port this is the only flaggable claim that can be made (dockable unless banned from the owners land area) I would suggest the corp must own an island before it can build a port - only one port per island. port decay 3 months.

Renting = hotel rooms - docking port space - bank vaults - shipyards (pay to use) - shop space - company owned npc's. All these things  need a port. Bank vaults within which a player can put their gear and it will stay safe - the ability to rent a space on any island where they have them in their port. (this is all in regards to rental) - this means that you can use companies bank vaults wherever they have set up a port. Owners of ports have their own npc police which guard and protect and kill banned players (or get killed by banned players).

Claim system is still not right. The game is still going to suck. Yeah, let's just give all the power to the claim owner of the freaking island.....booo!

Play your own game and then see how fun it will be to get the privilege to build on someone else's land claim. You know, being their slave and utterly nothing you can do about it otherwise. This makes for a really lame-ass PVP game. We don't want to build on THEIR land, we want to build on OUR own land. You guys continue to miss the mark on making a perfect pirate game and that is because you guys do not actually play it yourself or you would know what spices need to be added to the recipe to get her done correctly.

Personally, since you guys are compromising between PVP and PVE aspects and continue to offend one another, I would much rather you then just focus solely on a great PVE game instead. Add in needed fantasy elements that are seriously missing as of now.

    • The game really needs more diversity in creature types and these creatures need to actually have habitats that they would realistically be found within. All of the islands are right now is clusters of mobs just dropped "willy-nilly" all over the island without any real logic.
    • We need more depth to all of the skill trees and skill tree choices should be very spendy, forcing players to be more dedicated to their skill builds. This prevents the typical "jack-of-all-trades" type of character and ensures more uniqueness in battles as players would need to group with several other players in order to have all the skill needed to overcome obstacles together.
    • How about making lots of different dungeons and unique locations to travel to and actually adventure within. It is lazy to make the "bottled treasure maps" spawn the adventure. Let the adventure be available to anyone that visits these unique, dungeon-like locations as the mobs will naturally spawn during the spelunking of the cavern or dungeon? Players would need to form groups of players possessing different kinds of skill sets and gear and be required to cooperate in order to survive the vast depths. Their hard work and efforts would be rewarded with powerful treasures.
    • Why is there only a limited weapon and armor choices within the game? Cosmetical skins are not going to cut it and is really lazy....make all kinds of different armor sets with their own unique stats and appearances. Players want uniqueness and diversity in their appearances and their weapon choices. They do not wish to look like the same old "cookie-cutter" characters that exist right now.
    • There need to be stronger craftable items such as strongboxes and vaults or the ability to bury small caches of items. This would also create an awesome adventure all by itself where players could spend time and effort trying to find other pirate's hidden caches.

60% of the gameplay should be sea, sea trips, discovery of land, sea battles! Construction of all bases, fortresses, should be long enough! And then again millions of gates of giant walls and friezes together

Accessible does not mean being able to do everything a group can do..

I think it really depends on whether alliances will be possible in PvE.  I'm not sure about PvP, it's not my venue.  I'm testing out alliance dynamics on a different server and they're good, but need some tweaking to make them more viable.  But I'm not sure what the devs' intentions are for alliance capability.

they always stated it's for large companies.

LOL...  If I "don't want to accept"?!...  Dude! I linked you a post from Jat that clearly says it's for small groups, solo players, and large groups but it's you that can't accept it. WTF do you think "accessible" means exactly?  They want everyone to be able to play the game whatever their play style is. That doesn't mean it's made for large groups...  IT MEANS IT"S MADE FOR EVERYONE...  You can't actually be so fucking stupid that you can't understand this.  FFS pull your head out of your ass and "ACCEPT" reality.

for real though, link a dev post or company statement that says it's a game for large groups...  I'll wait...
