Had the same thing happening to me yesterday. Spent entire evening unlocking discovery zones only to see them missing a bit later. I had not logged out of the game neither did I change home server.

Am I the only one who actually likes this mechanic?

I fully agree on this, would be a great buff for small companies/solo/duo gameplay.
