Is the dragon even worth bothering with?

We noticed in the latest patch the dragon now only lives for 3 hours and we've spent nearly that long just sailing from place to place (especially with Sotd, wind, cyclones, fog, Etc). For 40,000 gold it doesn't seem worth trying to get something that has a good chance of dying before you get it home much less a chance to actually use it. So I'm asking those who have actually tamed one do you think it's still worth doing with the nerfs/short lifespan?
