TrevorJD 117 Posted December 31, 2018 Sextants aren't good for measuring speeds because you're looking at objects literally thousands of lightyears away. What you need is something far simpler. A rope, with knots tied in it. You heft it overboard and it drags in the water. The faster you're going, the more knots you can see. Then you can use the number of visible knots as an indicator of how fast you're going. If you really want to go overboard, you could even define a unit of distance based on it.
