Work in Progress - Custom Single Player Experience

Recommended Posts

A group of us setup a dedicated Atlas private server with a custom map, I made with low.ms which has been an awesome host I gave them permission to share my map 1x1 with others that get dedicated servers with them just give name "Athayus" to Admin Connor J. (I'm not paid by them just a creative spirit)

However as one of my side projects thanks to the dedicated server tutorials here has been to create an easy to setup "single player experience" for playing atlas. I also have been making a lawless based AI style custom map as seen below, for that experience on a 1x1 setup. When I say "A1" I mean the biome types I used.

Anyway below is a shot of the 1x1 map I setup so far with islands. So far we got whales, power stones, treasure maps, 3 starting areas, ships of the dammed running on various paths and grand open spaces for building on. I plan to go back and add underwater areas etc depending on how all that works once released. I don't take credit for the maps them selves just the structure of map setup etc.

So anyway this is work in progress, I'll try and update progress as I go for anyone interested. (Based on PVE A1 Servers)

This would be awesome to play on.  This is what we solo players would love to play on (or something similar)

I can't understand why they wouldn't allow some type of single player small co-op mode. They would get more sales of the game. The modding side of atlas is epic already. Anyway this is one of 3 start towns. On above map. I'm working on tweaking the map layout more but so far so good. Single Player also makes planning out cities and builds a lot easier for builders.

Their plans for revenue for this game is to have cosmetic micro-transactions like the armour that you can get in the freeports, In single player games there is no one to see the cool armour but yourself or you will use mods to insert it yourself which would reduce the income for the game, honestly I am surprised they allowed unofficial servers as they wouldn't be able to purchase from a game store so no income. But hey maybe they will remove the unofficial once the game launches.

This is a flawed business logic to think that people won't buy DLC's if the game is single player or has a single player mode, the game is multi player and if they release DLC's many users will still get them even if they prefer to relax in single player and when they want play multi player, it's not that the players are ONLY PVP or ONLY PVE. Many users enjoy both styles of game play. And user for micro transactions for single player wouldn't make sense as much as it would for multi player. But I find after 30+ years of gaming that the more you restrict peoples play styles the more they move on to another game that does give them what they want.

I play both PVP and PVE however as a full time designer and developer I don't have time to play GANK .. and there is a bigger difference in enjoyment of a game and or real pvp vs GANKing and if everything in the game GANKS you PVP & Monsters it's not fun. There is a difference between the honor of a proper dual and your dead in 3 seconds after spend 6 hours building up stuff. Most people move on from games like that.

Private servers give users some degree of enjoying the game in a way that suits their play style. PVE or PVP. If the makers of the game want a forced PVP GRANK experience thats great for people that enjoy that. But Many of us that don't enjoy that are not going to waste $60 just to get ganked by game mechanics. At least with a Private server we can tweak the settings to be more enjoyable.

As for DLC's I own every DLC's and seasons passes for ARK to support the developers even though I don't venture past default map all that much. I have 3 dedicated servers, I have this game paid full for it when it came out again supports development of early access.

The players of the game have asked for Single Player Mode, at least in single player if there is a full world wipe of 4 massive multi player worlds if there was a single player mode people that enjoy that wouldn't loose all their hard work which with the current setup is going to happen and it pisses people off and they look for a new game.

I think its short sighted when a developer doesn't at least entertain the idea of single player mode with a survival game for those that enjoy building or a smaller co op mode for those that want to explore and chill out together. Heck the Massive Multi-player side of this game is epic but it's over kill if your also trying to have a job, manage your family and other.

So that's my two cents. So with this I've been working on making a single player mode and a tutorial on it's setup. I have no eta for release but really this this be part the of the game stock. Period!

I enjoy building game servers, building in game, modding, level design, building networks, and relaxing with a few friends after work and enjoying the game. Hense we bought a private server the moment it was available etc, that's my fun.

If I want pvp or other I goto anthem or conan. In here having a lion up your &@)&!! while your trying to pvp other players is funny and huge waste of time.
