So two nights ago I had 11 (eleven) npc crew members on my schooner. When I logged-off for the night, they were all "seated" or "manned" on either a sail, steering wheel, or cannon. In other words, none of them were "sweeping the deck". They were all assigned to a task. The next day, they were all still on the ship. Last night, however, in order to save money, I unassigned all of them from their tasks. All eleven members were "sweeping the deck" when I logged-out last night. When I got back on this morning, they were ALL gone.
There was, and still is, plenty of gold in the ship resources box (appr. 400), and plenty of food in the food larder (appr. 1000 total items). There were no "Company" logs suggesting any of them were killed.
What do we think happened?
