Being able to claim land right from underneath someone has to be the worst game mechanic implementation

Someone can just plop a flag outside of your base walls and steal your bed right from underneath you, without having to ever set foot inside of your base. I wonder what drugs the devs were/are taking for ever thinking this mechanic made sense.
