I have done that a couple of times, changed a few islands around our main one, as long as you don't touch the one youre on, or any you've built on as you said, its fine, or has been for me

Same just happened to me :< spent 35mins or so waiting to die in my house as Iogged in and was half inside my floor unable to move.. xD then when I died it just seemed to delete my char and gave me no options but to create a new one.. Nice.
