Is anyone else having this issue?

A couple of nights ago we were out Whale hunting in A14. Found one and attacked, almost had it dead and all of a sudden we were taking damage underneath and there was nothing there. Looked using K mode and we were in deep water and nothing around us. Whale was running away in the distance. We lost our ship. Last night after building another ship for whaling we were in B13 when we spotted one. After we attacked it we began taking damage again underneath immediately. Not wanting to lose another ship we let it be and left. Tonight we go to C13 and started again. As soon as we attack we began taking damage underneath. All 3 times I have looked in K mode under the ship and there is nothing there and the whale/whales that we are attacking are no where near the ship. Can someone please explain this to me? Because I am totally lost with it. Thank you for your time
