Mac Pro 1,1 running 2x2 30 ticks

Recommended Posts

Never would I ever have thought it...but I pulled out a friends old original Mac Pro he had "donated" to me after getting his new Pro. I'm not a big Apple fan, so I never really made use of the system, and it eventually got mothballed. Anyway, I dropped a fresh SSD into it and installed Windows 10 x64 onto it (surprisingly easy even with the 32-bit EFI "limitation", heh). After some "de-bloating" of the OS, I promptly copied my server files over the network, established a 2x2 grid, and fired her up. Like I said, not a big Apple fan, but I gotta hand it to them- Jobs (RIP) had them build a tank of a box. This thing is a solid 10-12 years old (taking into account parts were being made before they were released), and carries a 2x2 like a horse. SO impressed, and very glad to have finally found use for this thing:

Specs

  • Mac Pro 1,1 (2008)
  • 2x Intel Xeon X5365 (8 cores @ 3.0ghz)
  • 32GB DDR-2 667Mhz ECC
  • 128GB SSD (Might be limited to 1.5Gbps/sec due to lack of AHCI implementation)
  • Windows 10 Pro N 64-bit

TL;DR: Old hardware can still have value. Building a server can be as easy as finding donor boxes/parts and building a franken-server (Results will vary, but with the game playable with a tickrate as low as 15, there is room to tinker). Boxes just like this are on eBay for a couple/few hundred bucks. If you're looking to go bigger than a 2x2 on the same box- look into old/used Dell Poweredge or HP Proliant blade servers. In the long run vs renting a server, it may be cheaper to just upfront the cost a of one or more of these babies and chain them together. The increased load on your electric bill will be far less than the cost of a rental. NOTE: DO. YOUR. RESEARCH!! BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING!!

I'd also try to source this stuff locally- as this stuff can be HEAVY, and shipping costs can take away the deal. There are always exceptions!
