How do I start with friends ?

I don't understand how can I start playing with friends on the same island form the beginning ? 

We pick same server and square on the map but we are on different islands ?

I think the only way to start together is spawning in a free port. When my friends and I played in the wildlands we had to keep on killing ourselves until we got lucky enough to spawn on the same island.

Yep, pretty much the right answer We ended up choosing one freeport and starting from there
