You can set the sextant minimap on the top left in the game settings, to be only visible when you keep pressing H. This give me 15FPS gain while not pressing H.

We had the same issue sometimes. If you unseat crew from cannons to decrease the gold cost and let them repair ship by sweeping the deck, log out and at the next day log in, they will sometimes bug out of the ship and sweep the ocean floor. They are still counting as ship crew for this particular Ship, you can only whistle them to be appearing on deck via Comma. I think ship-crew on cannons should cost the same as unseated crew (same as it is for sails), as long as the ship is fully anchored until the devs can fix this bug.

I think the devs doesn't count Gold as a ressource but as a currency. So every treasure map on a taxed island will help upkeep the island costs for the owner. As in reallife, you won't give your state 20% of your burger as taxes, but 20% of the sale price instead.
