So I and my friends play on a private server hosted through G-Portal. We run a server cluster with 3 expansions added (so we have a 2x2 grid) We had an issue come up with not being able to cross grids in game and we weren't able to reboot the servers. So G-Portal finally got around to rebooting it.. and this is what happened afterwards:
"Ok.. so here is what happened once we got around to checking the server crossover again. It worked... sort of. My crewmate was steering, I was operating sails. We crossed zone and he zoned faster than I did.. so I got stuck zoning (basically freezing up for several seconds (more like 30)). Anyway, my screen at the time showed ocean with different types of animals in the water, in the air, floating etc.. elephants, sheep etc etc.. no land. So my crewmate says I am sleeping on the ship when I finally unfreeze... but I'm not even on the ship anymore on my end. I'm on one of the starter isles in A1. Zoning pretty much duplicated my character. So I think ok, I will kill myself and respawn on the ship. I do so, and sure enough not only am I standing there alive on the ship, but my body double is laying there asleep on the bed (at this point her name is Player, whereas I have my character name still. When I talk in chat, the other person sees both myself and the sleeping "player" talking. One is in green and the other is in yellow. LOL. I only see the one chatline from my character I am playing. Ok so I figure I will log out and restart the client and see what happens. I notice logging back in that I don't get the option to start in A1 or B2.. just B2. A1 never shows up at grid selection, even after refreshing several times. So I log back in using the B2 which puts me back where I had just logged out from. The body double is still asleep on the ship. Hope ya'll can figure out what is going on and fix it. Right now we have no way to get rid of the extra body.. oh and it (the duped body) started sinking the ship btw because it counted towards crew even though it was not in our company. I'm just glad that I had removed everything from my character and stored it on land before going to test the server crossing"
While some of that may have been zoning problems, I don't know what parts were on G-Portals end or what was on the game side of things, hence the post here.
