  1. Unlike "RL" Atlas Pvp servers, everyone is a Pirate.. With out civilians and other sorts to prey on.. you end up with just Company wars and other "pirate base" plundering.. That, should be what makes it feel "unrealistic" to you, over bears being ridden (as above, they were used by some to haul things).  Everyone being a pirate works for smaller games, where you log in do some quick rounds and log out again.. mini game style.. In a game like Atlas, it doesn't feel right, Players really need other options, imo.. port towns that can be sieged and stuff like that. but, where the game goes, is up to Grapeshot, it is their game and vision of what they want out of a game.

  2. Pirates were people first, pirates as a "job"  or how they made their living, to survive and rarely got rich from it.

Large companies who have laborers and captains(people to go out on ships to raid.. others at base to farm) play the game in the most realistic way 😛

But, you really don't want realism, do you? Don't think any of us do.. What we want is "realism when it fits my argument on something I do or don't like".

  3. NPC on ships, I typically keep them ALL on passive and Set the cannons/swivels and all to the type of target I want. After you get on the helm you if you look down,  There will be several groups that can be toggled to attack/stand down, if any of them are not showing the hand icon, they are still toggled to attack.  How it works on console, I have no idea 😛

pc, if you put cannons on the back of your ship, it activates a new -group icon (back) group- or what not..  Accidental fire happens often if a player pulls into port and one of the groups is still active to fire on its set targets 😛

If your Npc are not on passive they can hop off the cannons and go attack something (not always a good thing) NPC right now seem to serve to fire your stuff for you, not so great at hand to hand combat)

You can set your swivel ship protection guys to attack at short/med range for use  in Pvp for instance to shoot at people trying to get on your ship and have all the cannon guys on stand down (so you don't waste all the cannon balls on trash)

While on helm, I don't rely on cannon npc auto shooting, I direct  them to the target with my helm controls.

Gets some getting use to and practice but, once you learn it, it goes pretty quickly.

  4. If you don't end up with amazingly funny or totally absurd moments of wtf in Atlas, you are doing it wrong 😛  From things you and your mates come up with or through interaction with random others who are themselves, coming up with them in this huge sandbox playground.  Even players who had it real rough at  the beginning of the year and may not be playing now, take some stories along with them that can have you floored in laughter for many reasons. Glad you are enjoying yourself 🙂

  5. tarot,  murdering people, pretending and playing with demons and undead and ships that have been damned, ghost ships  and other fantasy stuff..  ya think if a person had problems with one of those for the reasons Op said, they prolly would have problems with all over it and not be playing a game with it in the first place.  Dunno..  What triggers some may not even phase others, cant please everyone.

  6. Yeah, for land, they are mainly only for base defense -placed on cannons/swivels and puckles.. and the elevator thing as well.  So, don't expect to run out and hire a bunch of them to do all the farming for you atm. heh

  7. My daily sessions go, depending on what happens.. like, the other day, had a good day then I went and slammed my sloop against a rock and it sank next to my temp lil base.. so, I unloaded my suff, secured it and called it a day knowing that my next log in was going to be hitting up nearby freeport for a new one or farming for an upgrade schooner instead. No stress, just part of the game.. lol Not in any "hurry" to get to the top, enjoy the adventure it takes to get there.

Don't worry about a perm base or a cosmetically pleasing base initially. Also, you can re-spec skills at anytime so don't feel like you are locked in. You'll get the occasional free re-spec via leveling, and you can take some gold to Freeport to buy a re-spec.

    * Pickup bottles on the beach and keep the maps (typically spawn in evening)
    * Start on an island that has Bears, or Ramshackle travel to one from Freeport
    * Start on island that isn't limited in one of the basics (Wood, Fiber, Rocks, Metal)
    * Push your limits early. Try and lose your tames and ships. Everything is replaceable. The worst way to play this game is in fear of loss.

Goal 1: Get spear & bow as quickly as you can. Kill animals for XP. You can get the first dozen or so levels fairly easily this way. Stops being efficient after that.
Goal 2: Get a smithy and advanced tools (metal). This will greatly help with harvesting, which you do a lot of in general. Considering getting the first 2 levels of Hand Harvesting
Goal 3: Get taming and a tannery. Get a bear. Cannot overstate how life changing this is.
Goal 4: Get skills to build Sloop/Schooner. Use bear to help harvest fiber/thatch (some islands have this), and to help haul wood.
Goal 5: Do treasure maps with your Sloop/Schooner & bear. The XP from maps is HUGE. Keep an eye on quality of map, better maps means higher lvl undead (can overpower your bear)

Once you get mid-30's in level, you'll feel like you have access to quite a bit of things and the world will start opening up. You can really start doing whatever you want at this time. Don't wait to long to build your first cannon Schooner/Brig and take on the Ships of the Damned, can be a lot of challenging fun.

I really like how this game plan here is lined up … Yea, def don't live in fear if dying and loosing things along the way.. it is not just a maybe but a certain that you will lol, so might as well just go for it 🙂

  9. Keep in mind that Solo players will not be able to do everything that needs to be done right off the bat.. when In large groups.. 1 can focus on the weapons. one on taming for bears.. one for getting to stone for building bases right away and another for ship building asap.. the rest just farm the resources for a quick start to a large company...  IF there is only you and or a friend.. got to take it  a bit more slow.. even them maybe decide who is going to be your ship builder early on and who the tamer or base builder.. EArly levels that is 🙂 once you get up in levels you should slowly be able to fill out the other trees enough to do everything.

  10. On Singleplayer you don't need to claim an island, the world is your playground, do what you like.. On official, only 1 person/group can claim an island, to do so, they place the company flag down and wait for it to raise up.. to place a flag down they need enough points for any specific island (larger ones or ones close to a powerstone grid cost more points)

the higher the point value the more it is going to cost in gold.. for the initial claim as well as daily upkeep in payments.

Lawless islands: No one can claim, anyone can build.

freeport grid islands: no one can claim or build on.

If an island is claimed by another group ask them if it is ok to build somewhere on the island many do not mind as long as you keep your footprint small enough as to not disrupt resource spawns or their main base.

  11. People always complain that in Atlas the fighting seems slow and chunky.. When I watch people fighting it looks more like what you would see in real life two average joes throwign punches or swinging a heavy weapon around.. People are too use to having super hero ninja moves when fighting in games.. but, it does need some work to it, even saying that  🙂 lil more momentum with many actions. When I try to picture myself running down the street throwing punches without stopping.. I realize how absurd that is... I mean me running down the street for no reason, let alone being able to free punch everything like a boss 😛

  12. I have seen solo players take the lower end ones out with a handful of tamed pigs more than a few times 😛 YOU can NOT cheese them with Bows though, use to at first but, they removed it. Lower end ones are actually doable solo w/out bear.. upper end ones are doable in a group with melee/shields and some opt for a grenade round, opener.  but, bears are usually the easiest.  They are not an easy fight without. I consider myself a decent player, I do most of my stuff solo but, I even use a bear for the treasure chests, makes me concerned that they are going to take that (ability to do it with a bear) away because, as a solo (SP or not) I do no see being able to do anything but the lower grade chests then.. unless they add change something so to be able still..  I have gotten to the point of finding it fun to just run up and do a punch and run game with the lil guys.. I have done many chest solo lol but, eh.. no way could do the upper ones solo without the bear.. (but would be fine with another option, not attached to a bear meta, just use it as a need to do thing, currently.)

Do agree that the Bear is the most used beast in the game, it is used to assist in many aspects of the gameplay, gathering, chests, yeti, hauling, cart antics, basic protection vs wildlife. It is usually the only beast I will always go and get and have at hand. Others, like cat, can help with chest as well but, again, it is not useful or as useful for the other things  I have listed. heh.

  13. That is what get people hooked on breeding a "perfect beast" they keep breeding only the best stated ones or include a new one if they find it was a better stat, along the way. until they have a tame that is "the best stats for level" that they can get..  and how they can boost the over all Level as well.

and label them for the stats the have the best like, weight, stam, melee.. "that's my stam male over there, going to breed him with my weight female to see if I can get a baby with both the high stats" and often a mutation that will crank up level or stats along the way. lol people go all out, making folders to keep track of what has what stats.

Na, I bred about 200+ bears in Atlas to come out with solid black, high health/stam ones for taking on larger chests and yeti and stuff on one server. Was fun but, frustrating trying to decide what ones I needed to cull all the time and still keep the line improving as I went lolol.. Horses as well. 😛

What they should have done is released the game for the Xbox insider program for a few days before the release to stress test the servers & the current build of the game.

I agree this, if it was/is an option for em. mmMm

  15. Only this time it is because they needed to wait on Microsoft to add some backend code.

Unfortunately, our launch time for our Official Networks and Xbox Crossplay will be delayed. In order for the game to list, there needs to be a change to some backend configuration settings that can only be done with Microsoft's help. As these changes are necessary for the launch of the game, we’ll have to delay it until they’ve applied those settings in the morning (Pacific Time). We don’t expect the process to take a long time and are currently estimating the delay to be 4 hours, pushing the launch time to 4pm ET.

  16. Grapples are a addiction for me. I have never gotten stuck on a ladder but, did early on, get that, just cant go up one when anchored in shallow water, causing the ladder to bow inward slightly and blocking access.  When anchored, I usually use ladders (unless its a ship that I build an aftcastle on that clips through and I cant but, that's my option there, at that point.), when ever I am out at sea, I just grapple, I find it just easier and quicker than fighting the waves/ladder. lol Its like auto to use the grapple for many things now, not out of need but, ease of access and speed, to places.
