  1. This isn’t beta testing, it’s Early Access. When we conflate the two or regard them as interchangeable, we ignore a qualitative difference: money. Beta testers didn’t pay to test, in fact internal beta testers did so because it’s a paid job.Early Access we pay for. Now don’t misunderstand me, I’m not suggesting this means people have a right to expect a finished game. What it does mean is that they are now paying customers and do have a right to a higher set of expectations than unpaid beta testers. It is to the gaming industries advantage for players not to notice this meaningful qualitative difference and continue to use the terms interchangeably. It is not to our advantage as players to do so. Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites require games funded that way to lay out clear goals and expectations of what backers receive for their donation. Early Access likewise should have clearly set standards and expectations. That will only happen if players stop conflating it with beta and demand a greater level of transparency and accountability in exchange for their money, otherwise gaming studios will be happy to keep right on increasing their revenue without giving us anything in return.
  2. Can't recall who, but some guy posted here months ago thanking the devs because he was able to talk his boss into playing Atlas with him, and when the boss got stuck, he told him about eating shit in order to die and respawn. His whole point was he was living the american dream of telling his boss to Eat Shit and Die, and even getting thanked for it. That was a great post.
  3. You should feel free to call yourself any name you want, I promise you it troubles me not in the slightest. Genuinely glad you're enjoying it after the 10 month wait. I enjoyed the heck out of my first couple months as well.
  4. GrapeCard doesn’t want you chatting with other players. Pirates are men of action, not words! Belay yer jibber jabber, ya Salty Dog, and hoist the mizzen! (Pretend it’s “immersion”. They’ll fix it eventually. Probably.)
  5. Yes. In a survival game there is a vitamin system. It basically gives eating more depth than just EAT FOODZ.
  6. Yup. The problem is the fact some people ignore the term EA and expect a finished game because they paid for it, while others equate EA with old style beta testing. The truth is neither, but in some poorly defined middle ground that leaves no one with clearly defined expectations.
  7. I just did a pretty intense close between my last post and this one (20k) sale, so I cant even visualize atm, but I don’t recall red or black dots on the map. Honestly rarely looked at island maps zoomed in that close. Resource nodes maybe?
  8. The point of the icebox is it has to stay below a certain temp, which your boat will be above 90% of the time, even in the arctic. People usually put them underwater somewhere and fetch ice from them periodically for their preserving bags. I wasn’t actually trying to be a smartass but as you know they just redid the map, so I can’t reliably give you specific locations. Generally you’re rarely more than 2 grids away from salt, you just have to find where exactly.
  9. He’s planning to travel the map for DP’s before settling down and building a base. The stationary nature of iceboxes makes them problematic for his plan.
  10. Find some. Typically on beaches, typically in warmer biomes. Once you find a source, load up good with plenty. It will last if you don’t try to have too many bags. Don’t put stuff you can get super easy in preserving bags, like berries or cooked meat.
  11. The dlc’s In Ark didn’t bother me. They were clearly optional additional maps you didn’t have to have in order to enjoy the game. They not only allowed modders to make their own maps, letting people produce content for free that competed with their paid content, but they also let those same modders release the animals and items from those dlc’s as free mods, so in the end you only had to pay for the map itself, and you didn’t need their paid maps to have quality map options beyond the island. heck they paid selected modders to produce maps for players for free. That just does not scream greed to me. I know a lot of people take issue with releasing a paid dlc in a game still in Early Access, but I think it’s pretty clear that was a one time thing precipitated by the lawsuit. Is it a preferable situation? Ofc not, but in the overall context of the way Wildcard does business, I feel like there is a legitimate attempt to add value to the players experience in exchange for additional revenue. I’m fine with that.
  12. Glad to hear. Would hate for you to wait all this time and then not even like it. Now let’s talk again after 500 DP.
  13. Swear to dog I was once asked as a teenager working my first job at a Subway “ How long is a foot long sub?” *facepalm*
  14. Assuming you’re talking about non dedicated or SP. Obviously they wouldn’t allow players on an official multiplayer server to be able to alter such a setting because everyone would just crank that setting to the max so you might as well just put in the multiplier instead of having the option. Limiting inventory through stack limits is a widely used design concept. For the moment, we should assume they have it where they want it and will adjust as needed for testing purposes.
  15. When a company has created a clear precedent for it based on their track record to date, this is the alternative to a meltdown thread irrationally venting at them. Let's all have a laugh and take it in stride. You may notice that about half the folks posting here predicted on time launches. I myself predicted 3 to 4 hours. They were later than almost all who participated predicted, and this isn't their first rodeo. What does that tell you, honestly? There is pessimism, and then there is realism. Based on actual results, it could be argued most here weren't realistic enough.
  16. As much as I might criticize GrapeCard for their shortcomings, imo there are far worse hells in the gaming industry. Say what you want about this crowd, but they aren't actively seeking to increase monetization through lootbox mechanics that promote gambling addiction even in minors. If they are engaged in a cash grab, it's a cash grab of desperation, not "Hey we took grandma's jewels and cash, but while she's lying bleeding on the floor, don't we also have time to get all this antique furniture out of here as well? We could probably get a few bucks for it." That's what so called AAA gaming looks like these days. Come to think of it, maybe they should drop one of the A's and just make it AA gaming, because once they're done with you, you'll probably need a support group.
  17. Atlas’s mutation system may only be counting colors, not stats, but as far as anybody can tell, the system seems to be a direct port of Ark’s breeding.
  18. All of my friends are married with children. I am the cool uncle who comes over and does fun stuff, then I go home and I don’t have to punish anybody or pay for their college. All of my friends accuse me of cheating the system.
  19. Hi. Welcome to the forums. It’s always good to hear new voices, even the ones in my head. While I can appreciate the positive message and mindset you’re bringing to the table, as someone new there is an appreciation of context you can’t be expected to have yet. In short, when people express frustration at the delays, it is in the context of the fact that GrapeCard has done some version of this exact same nonsense just about every time they’ve had a big launch or patch release. I’ve been here since day one, and I had 4K hours in Ark before that, and it is always the same thing with this crowd. Nothing ever comes out on time or working properly. Yes delays are common in the industry, but professional outfits minimize them and communicate effectively with their customers and pkayers to set proper expectations. This bunch on the other hand has developed a habit and reputation for being comically late and handling things in a fashion that comes across as bungling, blame casting, disorganized and disjointed. If you think this was a one time thing, go look for the thread I started over the weekend creating a pool for how late the launch would be. What does that tell you about the expectations of long time players here? Oh, and since you’re new here, it would be easy for you to dismiss me as some blowhard, disgruntled troll venting unreasonably based on this single post. Ask around, I’m pretty fair minded. I believe in giving credit where it’s due and keeping criticism fair and I don’t like mudslinging. GrapeCard has earned this criticism.
  20. Yeah it’s so very important they go sign up for a social media platform they clearly don’t need otherwise instead of actually getting information from the game’s official forums. Why would anyone think that’s a good place to get information?
  21. Still applying for that communications job I see. You are of course correct.
  22. Let me assure you that official servers are crossplay, as it has been a hotly debated issue here for weeks if not months.
  23. Not to say I told you so, but you posted about doing this and I tried to warn you not to. Their track record for this sort of stuff is just too poor.
