Large cannons on tower on right have range to destroy base on left but mortars which are on base on left have no range because they can't make damage out of render distance. Large cannons - can, mortars -  can't. So it became that large cannons have bigger range than mortars.

Will the large cannons fire automatically with npcs on them? Wondering if I can use this for island defence?

No you can't. NPCs are buggy and do not fire at max distance - no matter the settings. Let's say the max distance a large cannon can fire is X. You buil one and you fire it and you see X is the distance (maybe place a boye or somth so u see how far u can fire). Now u place an NPC on that cannon and someone of your company or a friend leaves the company and sails with a trash-sloop towards that cannon to simulate an enemy. Start at the marked spot X and observe how the NPC will NOT shoot. Then sails straigh forward to the NPC and note at which point the NPC actually starts shooting: it is MUCH closer than you would think.

Because of this it is actually no problem to outrange any NPC-mounted weapon. No matter if you are on ship or land. NPCs only start shoot their weapons when enemies are way to close. This makes automated defenses ridicolous easy to deal with.

Some form of actual AI would probably be needed which they don't have.  They should, but they don't.   In all of the Unreal based games I've played of late the AI is very rudimentary.   They just take orders with imposed limits that act as a replacement for good AI.

They probably need to hire someone that knows what they are doing to tackle better AI.  I've seen better AI in 20 year old titles, one of which happens to be one of the UT games where you actually also had voice commands instead of a lame command wheel, and you didn't need a 3rd party app to do it.

That's a good breakdown of it, ty!
