Mortars vs Ships... the problem

Recommended Posts

Mortars are amazing, very good for defending your place but... as this game supposed to be ship orientated, could we have some way to hit Mortars on high places from ships ?

that game mechanic is already in the game . . . it's called skill. you have to actually get OFF THE BOAT, climb the cliff, kill the mortar gunner, profit. this is so easy, there should be no further discussion.

Already insanely easy to assault shoreline bases and defenses. Mortars are the only things that prevent everything within cannon range of the shoreline from being levelled. They already require a player to be manned and are thus not automated defenses. If you want to assault harbors and land holdings, bring a ground crew. Or should we also be asking for power stones and fountains of youth to be things we never leave the ship for either?

I have a better idea.  How about totally changing the game to get rid of the whole having to defend bases thing.  Allow us to park beside an island and our ships have 100 times more HP than present.  But this would have an invisible timer.  You can't just run to an island and anchor and be safe.  If somebody is pursuing you, they know your timer isn't done and they can still sink you.  Also, get rid of the damage numbers so that people are not aware of how much damage they are doing.

Make the game about having a Fleet of ships, not a base.  Making a temp base with crafting stations...something small, should be very easy.  Decay should happen, and be fast.  Structures disappear in 72 hours, period.  You only set one up to build a ship, and repair them.  No tames needed...your crew does the gathering with you.

The biggest problem with this game is the fact that you have to build and defend bases, and no matter how big you build, people can easily knock it down.  One way or another, the focus needs to be on getting ships out to sea, exploring with those ships, and fighting with those ships.

That could be fun.  The neighbors I do not like would be out of mortar every night.  Sail at max range and zip zag.  Will never touch you.

I guess its a timing thing.  If enough mortars are properly spaced that could present issues.  If thats the case then ramshackle sloops galore.  Couple buddies sail a dozen of them in over an hour.......no more mortars.

So its a little slice of lame PVE whenever you need it? Yea no thanks. Lets leave PVE to PVE servers. PVP servers do not need safe spaces.

The only thing that was garbage was your answer.  It wasn't thought out.  It was an emotional answer, like that of a toddlers, because you snowflakes are throwing a temper tantrum that your offline PvO is being removed.

Star Citizen is, and always was going to be about ships.  The Crowd Funding record was 10.3 million dollars, for the Apple Watch.  Star Citizen smashed that at over 200 million.  In that game, your ships will despawn when you leave the game.  In that game, when you go to a port, and land on a pad, the ship despawns.  Nobody can offline it.  It's about ships, not bases, and yet far far more people play that, and far more people have bought into it.  So just because you didn't like the idea, doesn't make it garbage.  If you want to debate points, fine.  I am all about that, and agree that no one person has all the answers.  It's through the debating of ideas point by point that we learn which are viable, and which are not.  If you don't have the patience to do that, stop posting.

I enjoy having bases. I enjoy defending them, when I am able to defend them. We defeated and/or made friends with all of our neighbors until our nearest opposition was CSTG. The problem there was that our time zones didn't match up. They were most active when we were not and vice versa. So a lot of the base defense fell into offline castle defense games where each side set up NPC defenses and hoped they'd weather the night.

why are you insulting me dude? My answer isn't emotionaly. It's simply a fact. But with your offline random "argument" coming in of nowhere I see you have your fordefined stubborn opinion not beeing able to accept others.

Think through your idea while watching what this game is about.

It's not made for just sailing around, maybe you should play sid meier's pirates instead.

great for star citizen, but if you haven't noticed this is another game. This is not a revamp of star citizen, maybe of ark tho.

So your ideas should be to improve atlas and not to play star citizen. It's like I bring in the idea to make it like a new wow addon.. this is simply stupid, since people are not here to play these games..

Exactly. Well said.

Folks like him are really deep down PVE players but they will never admit it. It's a prestige thing they don't want to be seen to be a PVE player, they don't want to be called a PVE player but no matter how hard they try and disguise themselves they remain a PVE player. From my experience playing many games with various folks you are either born a PVP player or a PVE player. I've rarely seen one successfully cross over to the other. You either love competition and being challenged or you absolutely hate it and want things nice and easy.

There is nothing wrong with PVE players but problems arise when those in denial go onto a PVP server get flogged and then come on here the forum and demand there be "rules" and "regulations" and call players that do PVP "toxic" and "griefers" among other things. Most of the time developers ignore them as they realize the silent majority are busy playing the game and not on the forum demanding the game be made easier. Sadly it seems this time they were vocal enough to grab the devs attention and the end result has been the disaster that is now unfolding ie a dead game.

This whole new system that is being added is really one just big disguise. Officially it is to stop "Offline Raiding" (this is a completely exaggerated issue btw) but really if you scratch the paint a bit you'll see underneath  what they are really trying to do is make it harder to do PVP. If they had wanted purely to stop Offline raiding they could do that easy enough by making the base invulnerable when no one is offline. It's a simple thing to do and infact ARK had servers that had that whose code they could have easily imported.

However they gone much further then that. They are now saying you also can't attack bases even when players are online without first buying a token and letting them know your coming. This really shows what their true aim was and that is too make PVP more noob/casual friendly. Basically a sort of casual player mode has been implemented. Risk free, non competitive PVP gaming complete with safe spaces.

The above statement shows that it is you, sir, that is the PVE player playing on a PVP server. It is you, that want to have PvP go nice and easy, as you prefer hitting bases of offline players instead of declaring war and actually have to fight for it.

Now we can argue about game mechanics all day long, but this game does not have true skill based PvP game mechanics in the first place.

There you are, nothing easier than raiding offline bases and ships.

Anyway, the point of the Original post was, that I feel the game should become more orientated around ships and that *if* Mortars are allowed to hit ships, give ships a way to return the fire. Getting OFF the ship to climb ON the mountain to disable the mortar is entirely possible, indeed - but my point is aimed more towards 'make this game less ARK and more Pirates' by moving the focus point of the game to ship, ship PvP, raiding with ships and less to big island bases and PvP with Animals (aka AvA).

I want more ships, less tames and islands

If you aren't aware, people were/are ripping it for being too much like ARK...saying it is simply ARK with ships.  The general public do not want to play another ARK.  We already have ARK.  We don't want another ARK, and the Devs don't want to make another ARK.  They do want to use what can be reused, which is smart, but they don't want this to be ARK with ships.  My suggestion was just an idea.  You toss around ideas on what can put the focus on ships, and going to other islands.  People do not want to play a game where you have to fear traveling across the map, because your base is so fragile, so easy to take down when you aren't there.

The point is that it wasn't a garbage idea.  It was simply that you do not like the idea.  Fair enough.  We will never get everyone to like everything.  When the game is done, everyone will still have their own ideas of what changes could make it better, and we will never get everyone to agree on any one idea.  That's OK.  That's just part of being human.

Exactly...it's almost hilarious that those complaining about a mechanic that is going to force more PvP and less PvO/PvE, are calling those who support it, PvEr's, and claiming to be truly hardcore.  These are the kids who grew up using cheat codes on every first play through on console games.

no it was a garbage idea for sure. Your idea has nothing to do with the game. You can't change the whole gamestyle. I'm not going to repeat myself. You still don't accept other opinions. This game is not ARK , it's far from beeing ARK. So you are the general public and I'm the lonely survivor? fear traveling across the map? Base is fragile? I think I missed something out on this game, or some people just have no idea how to play it

dude pls do everyone a favour and play your star citzien and leave this game alone if you are so unhappy.

Guys back to the idea, all I propose in this topic, is a way for ships to take down land-based defenses, even those in the mountains (like mortars) to push the focus back to ships and make ships the most viable and the most important asset in the game, with less emphasis on bases and tames.

Maybe we can have a special type of ship, with similar mortars, designed to do coast and land bombardments. Such a ship could be relatively vulnerable to other ships and need a ship escort, just one of my thoughts how to solve this AND push ship PvP further.

Don't worry Mr PVE outed himself in another thread. He linked a video showing all his bases he built from ARK. It's like a collage of some of the most inefficient, poorly designed, poorly defended PVE bases you'll ever come across in a video game.

Here is the video. Try not to laugh although I will admit it is quite hard not to:

Hey man, thanks for posting that for me.

Mr. Mullet Force doesn't understand that you can actually do two things at once.  Like walk and chew bubblegum.

Hey look, I did something else during that time too...

You shoot BB guns at me, and I return fire with shotguns, Mr. Hardcore.  LOL
