3am (f)lame arrow meta

Recommended Posts

(Related from suggestions thread to encourage discussion)

I think we’ve seen now what happens when you make it way easier to drop naked flame arrow guys offshore to wipe a harbor than it is to just take on the cannon emplacements……….  I mean it’s right there in the trailer.  Boats sail up to a base and broadside it while defenders are shooting off mortars.  You advertised it.  We saw it.  We wanted that.

Unfortunately the game has degenerated into making a super speed brig, loading it up with cheap grief gear, sailing it near someone’s harbor, drop off a couple of trolls, and then move onto the next island/tile.  Rinse repeat.  I’m not blaming people for doing it, it’s really effective.  WE DO IT!  But it’s shit meta, and shit boring……. And it must be driving people off in droves, especially small companies that are offline for 12 hours at a time.

So I have a few suggestions.  A lot of people aren’t going to like them but I think you really need to do something to make this game work as advertised.

Just delete flame arrows and oil jars.  They’re too effective at sinking boats and they don’t really add anything else to the game.  You’ve already nerfed their affect against wilds/players.  Seriously, no-one will miss them.  At the very least make them not effective against boats or boat planks  I mean they’re waterlogged ffs….  I’m probably more ok with a troll spending an hour getting into 2 boats to popcorm the boxes than I am them spending that same hour sinking 20 boats.

Nerf grenades against structures.  They seemed to be in a good place previously with being good at destroying cannons.  I’d revert them to that and maybe make them effective at anti-personnel possibly.

Reduce the cost of NPCs.  Don’t get me wrong, gold isn’t that hard to get, but it’s kind of boring and a constant chore.  What’s worse is the weight of it and distributing it around your base and boats.

Give us some sort of mechanic to feed/pay NPCs across a region or a larger area.  Can we get like a vault and a market, give them a fairly large radius so that I can have one in the middle of my base and have it reach gun  emplacements on the other side of my harbor?  Would be great if it had some permission system too, like only feed/pay boat NPCs on some kind of white list?  Maybe I can give the NPC like a payslip to allow him to get paid from it?  (trust me, big companies need this) You wouldn’t even need to make stuff cheaper then.  You could just dump all your gold in one spot and monitor the levels much more easily.

Buff puckles a bit.  Not much.  Like 25% more range/damage would probably make them work as intended.

What do you mean? May be we should discuss the issue itself, not the consequences?

I like the idea posted here, make a way for people to deffend themself from the griefers, its a pvp game, yeah sure, but atleast make it some challange to actualy raid someone, now you just can look at battlemetrics, see its only 2 people in that grid, go over there and sink everything. trust me, after a while, that grid will not stay 2-10 ppl, it will be 0. already see it in some grids, 0 players

So you want stronger AI, but to discourage offline griefing? I assume you can see the huge problem with wanting both of these together?

If you make AI stronger, then why would (for example) I attack you whilst you're online so I can deal with even stronger AI and players at the same time?
Which I'm sure is why you'd then suggest AI is stronger if someone is not nearby. But that would mean logging off, would be a defensive tactic. Which it should never be, this would also help large groups protect more assets over larger distances.

Love the white list idea, albeit, not sure being able to pay all of your harbors defenses from a single place should be a luxury. The more space you own, the more maintenance you take on.

So basically you're whats wrong with the game. If you think its driving people off in droves, maybe put a post up about it but not actually perform it. The player base in this game is equally responsible for the game taking a nose dive

Its PVP dude. You use the most effective strategy. If I don't do it to you, you'll just do it to me.  Its like quetzals in ark. For ages the were super broken.  I still used them. Doesn't mean it isn't broken.

I don't think I asked for stronger AI did I? Or do you mean making puckles slightly better?

Currently they are effective against boats but not players. So players just stop using boats. They clearly want us to use boats right?  Instead what happens is you log off and wake up the next day to find all you boats sunk by 1 naked guy with flame arrows and oil jars.  So what do you do then? You can farm up 1 boat, some flame arrows, oil jars and just go sink their fleet at 3am.....

Wouldn't it be more fun to sink the fleet with another fleet?

Clearly we differ opinions on puckles. I find them highly effective against players. 40/50 damage a hit to nakeds. 20 something to plate, breaks plate fairly quickly. They have great range.  and you just have them placed properly so that you're always firing when hostiles are near your boats, perferably by multiple. Usually that means minimal structures near your boats for hostiles to LOS your defenses. Ez

How much damage are puckles doing to boats btw? I haven't tested it. No ones come close to my boats for the last few weeks 😄

Puckles can be destroyed by cannon bears pretty easily.

How is this relevant to the original post?

It is a response to your post, not op. Thats why I quoted you.

But ye, i agree puckles do well against flame arrows griefers. But nothing will stop cannon bear griefer.

Well nothing is as good as an actual online player. Which is why everyone has these issues. Bears, you need ballistas, players you need puckles swivels, boats you need cannons.

Nope nope and nope

I have to solo for now due to RL commitments , as a solo player you have to specialise in ship building as far as schooner , base building up to stone then points left for survival , that leaves the only raid weapon you can produce is yes you guessed it oil and flame arrow for wooden structures , it also gives you a slight ability to take on larger groups if they gank you by sneaking into port armed with a few grenades to catch them un aware.

If you ask for those to be nerfed or removed your basically removing any chance a solo or small group has defending itself or raiding small structures.

Stop being lazy get NPC on puckle guns and defend your harbours better , if they are swimming in build gatesa and build down , have one channel in and out covered by guns

Well, latest patch nerfed them and thank god!!  With the meta how it was I could raid any base in minutes with oil and grenades.  Puckles…..lol.

You're not going to compete solo in PVP regardless of what tools you have.  Company up.
