Change overweight ship from sinking to cannot move

Recommended Posts

People are currently sinking other players ships by deliberately making them overweight or have too many crew.
This is a simple fix... make it affect the movement speed instead of sinking the ship.
Just change the line of code that commands "sink the ship' instead to 'set ship movement speed to zero'.

this has been asked for a lot i would hazard a guess the devs will be looking at this and trying to find a solution

the issue with set ship to zero speed of over weight players will just log out on your boat you can’t drag them off and u won’t be able to move your ship

+ players can just build few rafts, park it next to lawless and build "floating" permanent base with impunity.
Or make schooner (which has more place) and make it practically floating base platform. No need for land anymore - excluding tames.

Not that it would be too bad (until you had so many ships parked that you would not find place to throw anchor).

They should just make anchored ships unable to be sunk by weight

This isn't something easily solved by that though.  Because sinking ships in PVP due to this mechanic(while shitty) can be seen as a valid tactic.  I mentioned in another post that for at least PvE an alarm system of some sort alerting companies of who was doing it(steam id and name not just name) would be beneficial, perhaps this is a craftable thing or an animal you can place somewhere like Ark had(Parasaur).  Or even let us reuse the drydocks to put our boats back in them when we are done sailing for repairs and other maintenance.  But overweight ships need to have real consequences otherwise we just have floating bridges island to island.

The best quick solution would be just to start banning people doing it. Put some alerts on ship sink by weight, add some logging, like who is on the ship with how much weight when it was destroyed and periodically look through the log. If there is a person with 10k of weight on itself on PvE... Ban. If there is 20 persons of company X on company Y ship... Ban those persons.
Ban enough people and we will see drastic decrease in how often this exploit is used.

Oh I 100% agree with this.  That would be the quick solution, but requires an admin team capable of handling these issues quickly and with EA Ark handled the way it was I'm not sure we are going to see that any time soon. So a workaround(if your in an area where people are doing this as common practice)  would be to put the boat in a drydock that is protected by some kind of enclosure.

or well non company members cant interact with the ship-go on it, period

That would actually be extremely antisocial and counterproductive for building communities. While i understand that for some people griefing and name calling is the most prevalent way visible in interactions, positive ones happens also. A lot.

The people sinking boats this way typically load themselves up with thousands of units of metal (Which while it super encumbers them, doesn't immobilize them), then they grapple up onto the boat.

Even in PvP it seems pretty unimmersive and gimmicky that a human being can carry enough metal to break a galleon in two, without also breaking all their bones.

I agree it does seem pretty unimmersive, but the ability to overweight a boat in PvP is an actual tactic, the method they are using however is absolutely ridiculous.  If you have open containers or something like that where they can load it down that way, then sure you brought that on yourself.  But the grapple working still even though you overweight yourself is just insane, let alone the ability to walk around with 10k+ weight of stone/metal/gems.  There are quite a few changes that need to be made to make this work in a fully immersive way.  Does it really sound immersive to be able to have infinite weight on a boat, while anchored or to be able to haul around infinite weight because your allies weight doesn't count toward your ships weight?

You're right, allowing boats to be anchored and immune the the effects of weight would be over stepping. I do like the idea of being able to dry dock your boat back into your shipyard. Being able to do repairs and upgrades the the underside and the ability to relaunch your boat would be a welcome mechanic.
