Weight on Ships

Recommended Posts

So I've built every ship in this game already. The system is awesome and its really fun but theres a huge problem with all of. The WEIGHT ON SHIPS!!! Building a galleon it has 20k weight starting out or whatever but once your done putting all the shit on the boat. I.E. the planks so the thing does sink, youre at 8k weight. Now you gotta add all the crew members, all the cannons, all the resources to make the repairs and just general upkeep of the game. Its still a usable ship. But I think its quite ridiculous that just putting the planks on the boat make it out to 8k weight. Please change something about this

Yeah honestly, a big complaint for me about the game with the ships is the weight. I think the weight is honestly a joke and you are correct. By the time you put your must have resources to repair and some ammo you don't get a lot left for resource runs. I would like them to increase the weight of all ships by 50% to start at least, this would at least promote trade runs etc.

But with a weight increase should come with a cannon limit on ships as well, if that is the concern.

That's just the base weight limit, after you level up your ship a few times and upgrade the weight limit it gets better. This is a pretty decent method that allows captains to choose what type of ship they are sailing. You both are probably not wrong though, perhaps a little buff to the initial weight limit might be needed.

theres already a cannon limit for the most part. you can only make so many gun ports but yes resources runs are a must. 90% of the time im finding myself sailing to a different section in general and only bringing back half of what I need. Granted its only like the beginning of the second week of this game and theres still tons of room for improvement. but feel weight on ships is one of the top priority

You can't even do a resource runs properly because of the limited weight, once you have a few replacement parts and 1 stack of materials to repair minus a stack of metal because that is too heavy. You don't have a lot of room to put extra resources on from other islands, if you get weighted down with all the AI ships you are done.

Level the ship. 300 weight per level on the galleon. 30 levels is 9k more weight

I mean you cant really go sail around without thinking "Do we have enough mats to repair if we get jumped by damned ships"

Umm, yeah, you can. Lots of people have and are. You don't need every single cannon slot filled. Sail around your home island and get some levels. That is literally all it takes to level, sailing.

Have you fought low level damned ships though? you get a lot of levels off of just that

Weight is the balance tool here.  If you want to ship goods you will not have many cannons/ammo. You will also use weight sails.  If you want to be a brawler you will have weight sail. To hold all those cannons and repair materials/ammo.  If you want to be fast attack you will run fast and light (Speed Sails) with limited ammunition/crew/repair resources and you will be able to catch and outrun most things but you will have to return to port to restock often. You decide what you want your ship to be specialized in.

Building the ship is slightly different than captaining the ship my friend. Choose carefully what you take with you.  I've threw gold, metal, and other resources overboard to catch a fleeing ship before. I've even told a PC to jump off my boat because he was slowing us down. He rejoined after we caught up.  🙂

I agree if you wan't to build a ship for moving cargo don't put a ton of cannons or maybe at most a few on the aft so you can lob at pursuers as you evade or none at all. A ship is either intended for battle and is loaded to the brim with cannons and doesn't have much capacity for cargo or is lightly defended but able to carry a good amount of cargo. I can easily outrun SotD if I keep my weight on the ship below the over encumber limit where ships slow down considerably. Many merchant ships would be escorted by fighting ships. I realize this may not be an option if your company isn't big but I have sailed around 40 hours since the game came out and not been in a single engagement sailing sloops and schooners and a short trip on a brig less an occasional shot from a SotD as I cruise past. If you are having problems evading a fully loaded warship chasing you down (which is probably unlikely) just dump some weight overboard and you will quickly outrun them for a loss of some supplies.

I would also always recommend using speed sails over weight and maneuvering. Medium speed on sloop. Large speed on schooner with a small maneuvering or small speed. It makes sailing into the wind a bit of a pain but speed is king. The weight sail increase is a static increase (about 10 ship levels of weight)  and no better in speed than the maneuvering sail and the maneuvering sail is noticeably slower than the speed sail and based on how slow it felt to me will leave you in peril of escaping SotD or other boats.
