Ask A Pirate Day. Q&A With the Devs #2

Recommended Posts

QandA_AskAPirate_1920x1080-min.jpg

Ahoy Pathfinders!

We’re happy to see that many of you responded with much interest in our last Q&A with the developers!  We’re here with our 2nd round of Ask a Pirate Day, where our developers aka the crew answer your questions from Twitter, Facebook, Steam, Discord, and of course, the forums.

Remember guys, we’re still in the very beginning stages of this renewed Atlas journey! The changes that we are making and considering are setting the framework for more changes to come! You can’t have a building without a solid foundation first, am I right mateys? As we continue to examine the game and receive your feedback, it is possible that we may change courses as well. Thanks for joining us in Early Access to help shape the ATLAS experience.

Without further ado, here is our next set of Q&A! 🙂

:anchor: DevELOPER Q&A :anchor:

Question: Do you guys have any plans to fix the issue of people using freeports as safe storage?

Answer: Yes. However, it may take some time to implement any changes.

:wheel:

Question: Do you plan to balance Drake? It seems very hard compared to Hydra.

Answer: A larger pass of all encounters is coming and we will endeavor to fix this then.

:wheel:

Question: When do you guys plan to update the optimization of the game? Even people with good graphics cards have a hard time getting 60fps with high settings.

Answer: That is in the works.  As we head towards 1.0, things should get better.

:wheel:

Question: Can you guys make mounts less of a focus in this game?

Answer: We agree.  More and more "design energy" is being put into ships and the ocean.  We are also planning some simplifications for land-based interactions. The changes we are making now are really the foundation for changes planned for the future. It may not be obvious choices now but hang in there with us.

:wheel:

Question: Will the 120 level cap on creatures be adjusted, or set to be adjusted, so those who would like to play a bit more with breeding be allowed to do so?

Answer: Right now, we are focused on putting more fun stuff on the water and encouraging players to play around there more.  So, for now, I'm afraid this is a "no". Hang in there, though. Again, we’d like to emphasize that the changes we are making now are really the foundation for changes planned for the future.

:wheel:

Question: When can we get the devkit updated?

Answer: It's in the works as we speak.

:wheel:

Question: Are we ever getting new ships?

Answer: Yes, we are working on a new, more optimized system and will be launching additional ships once that's in.

:wheel:

Question: Are you ever going to increase the structure limit on ships?

Answer: It's hard to say.  Right now we are taking a deep dive into making ships more viable and interesting as a whole and that may or may not play into it

:wheel:

Question: Any plans to delve into an upgraded Atlas version on Unreal 5?

Answer: I would love that.  We are looking into the possibility of it.

:wheel:

Question: Will there ever be an option to seat and unseat crew from cannons and sails from the wheel from the radial menu?

Answer: That is something we are currently considering.  The realism of NPC's and NPC management is front of mind with respect to ships, but nothing firm has been decided.  All I can tell you is that we don't like how stiff they are either.

:wheel:

Question: Any plans to pay NPCs to gather resources, man ships, etc? Will the NPCs be a little smarter?

Answer: Cleaning up everything about NPC's is going to come first and then we'll take a look at how we can grow them.  But for now, this is a long way off.

:wheel:

Question: Will you make animals immune to damage while in a bola on pve. So much griefing going on.

Answer: Yeah, we understand that PVE is a bit rough.  We'll take a look.

:wheel:

Question:  Will there be a focus on bringing the ocean more content? New ships, more parts to make ships better looking, maybe different sails, and fixing the current ones.

Answer: Absolutely.  That is our primary focus right now.

:wheel:

Question: Are you going to add a mail system to talk to other pathfinders in regions other than your own? As well as other MMO features?

Answer: Right now we don't have any dedicated plans for mail, but there are some systems coming online that may facilitate the development of a mail system and others that would definitely benefit from it. It won't be soon but it may well happen.

 :wheel:

Like always, we’ll try to answer as many questions as we can in our next Q&A session. Please feel free to ask away on this forum post, Discord, Twitter, Facebook, and Steam!

  :wheel:

what about the problem where we sail into alot of SoTD after cross another server? i sunk 2 times bcs of that... 1 time with a brig and 1 with a schooner
I mean travel from one to another server bcs they are so often way too close to the Server Edge, i dont mind fighting them but sailing into 2-4 SoTD will kill any small ship, specialy without any Canons.. but how can we react that fast? when we reach another server they already shoot before we even see that they attack

Was it just me or did anyone else get a sense of sarcasm from that?  😄

Me and my crew really jist want the optimization to be main priority.

As of now we have stopped playing beaides feedin crew n animals n resetting the timers. None of us can do anything anywhere in the game without immense lag and disconnects. We have been very lucky to not have had any sunkens ships yet. Once the lag is resolved or at least more tolerable then im ready to play more. I really love this game and i cannot wait to play it without gettin headaches from rubberbanding and screen tearing.

Personally I'd rather hear nothing at all than many words that  say nothing at all. If Atlas doesn't work out then I can thoroughly recommend the team seek employment in politics. Where vagueness is seen as a positive character trait. At least I think that's what I might mean to say, but i'll have to look into it first. Or maybe I might. thx for all the info, most helpful.

- XBOX ONE AND PVE EU SERVERS:
The PVE EU is overloaded. It is impossible to play on XBOX for BRAZIL. Populated islands like those at E8 are inaccessible due to the PING greater than 200. Less populated islands with 20 players, PING reaches 180. This is not the worst. The game automatically closes whenever many structures appear together on the screen.

I really don't understand how they say they are listening to the community. We are shouting in the forums, disagreeing and everywhere, saying that the game is not working. But they just ignore it completely. They are keeping the game based on promises, but so far nothing practical. Nobody is asking for new content, we are asking for a game that works. Focus on making the game work. Focus on balancing the things that already exist. I said this in disagreement and I will repeat it here. I am impressed by the level of incompetence of this company. Companies go bankrupt for much less. They still work the way they do is a big mystery to me. They learned nothing from the mistakes made at ARK.

I did about 20 sunkey ships yesterday. Wasn't a single one I couldn't access. I agree that there are a few I have seen in the past that I haven't been able to access, but that is few and far between. Their development time is probably best used elsewhere.

This Q&A session is invalid 100% because they did not want to answer any of the really tough questions like why are you trying to take a DUMP on all the PVE players you know the ones who play the game the most?   Why are you looking to scrape PVE into the ocean ?  Answer some of the question people really want answers to then we can call it a fair and even Q&A session you cherry picked the question you knew were going to be easy to answer.  Get real and be adult about your jobs.   I know this post will probably go poof into the nether somewhere because you do not want folks bringing up your dark thoughts about PVE.      I know that there are some who will flame this post go for it that okay with me.

Servers guys! Servers improvement!!!

That's the goal! That's your main priority right now!!! Because all you've done so far, and goin to do in future - will simply level out by 250 ping, rubberbanding, freezing, warping back, sails dancing, jerky sailing, impossible to fight at land and in sea etc.

So first you need to do, is to make servers handle all players creations (monstrous mega bases and even that Pyramid at C7 PvE), and at least 40-50 ppl on server at once.

Only then - new content, balance, etc.

p.s. - As I mentioned before and this is very VERY unpopular possible solution - cancel all "Minecraft" in the game and introduce premade optimized houses.

Are the files that allow modifying the translation of the game to be updated?
The document "ShooterGame.archive" is currently out of date. Many new items are missing.

The Spanish translation, and others, has many errors and I would like to be able to correct it.

Are you plan to make the ship windows more realistic?  (like some moding private servers have),if there is also provision for NPC's  to make repairs to all parts of the ship and not just the Decks/Planks?

P.S. A server with PvE+PvP  (high risk rewords, maybe gold mines in pvp regions) it would be very interesting.

Fix the servers guys. I think rather than by cutting costs and spreading the pve servers between the eu and the USA (that's the reason between the massive differences in ping rate. I have this on good authority from a network techie) they really need to re-open the na pve server. Also can we have the support section of the website fixed. Trying to put a ticket in and cannot. Cheers

This is ME, trying play today at F8 - Dignigan Island.
Im Playing from Brazil at an XBOX ONE S. I Have 250G Optical Fiber of the Internet. 19 Player Connected.
This island is very low populated. Try to imagine me playing on grid E8. Unbelievable as a game like this may still be working. Back in the days of Steam's greenlight, the game would have been banned.

As I mentioned earlier. The Game doesn't even work and you are creating additional content instead of fixing it.

Retur to the NA Servers, playing in the EU is impossible.

I am in EU and I have 200ms ping on most of the servers. At the beginning I had around 30ms. This is not issue with servers being in EU (yes for people from other continents it ads around 100ms) , but this is not the issue here. Game needs a really good server optimization. Splitting servers by region won't do a thing.

@ Devteam

Will there be a difference between game mechanics involving PvE and PvP?

Yeah, we understand that PVE is a bit rough.  We'll take a look.

Sounds good!

About the structure limit on ships. I can just say it again, there are way to many parts needed to simply fill decks or build walls and ladders.
Add 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 1x2, 1x3, 1x4 deck parts and 1x2, 1x3, 1x4 walls and make ladders one piece. You will be able to build the exact same ship with alot less parts and take alot load of the server and allow better ships to be build within the same structure limit.
Also works for bases and can be done with foundations as well to not require so many single parts that create unneccessary load for the servers.
You dont even need new parts for this just merge the 1x1 parts together to form the bigger ones.
Or create a dynamical system that gives us a switch build/merge mode and lets us place identical items that are merged together with the existing one multiplying the health corresponding and creating a larger part where we can add more parts as we see fit.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to the new ships and sea content 😃

Personally I am pretty good at building ships, and I like doing it. A bit more realism would be nice, but I think by the sounds of things it will be getting closer to being an Atlas sea of grieves. With everything pre-fabed .So we can all spend more time being civil to each other at sea.

Snippets taken from a few answers, all with exactly the same meaning; whoever wrote this should be applauded for their ability to find a synonym for 'we're working on it' 12 or so times.

A road map for ATLAS development was laid out by then Community Manager Dollie out at the end of August 2019 - that was almost a year ago and we never left 'Phase 1'. There have been periods of total silence from 'Grapeshot' with zero indication as to how development is progressing or where the game is headed next. We've heard precious little from the new Senior Community Manager Chismebeard who was announced nearly two months ago.

Once again, this Q&A has absolutely nothing concrete - no new information, no plans, no specifics, just another empty promise; we're working on it. I would caution any player against further supporting this disgraceful company until they, firstly, release a real plan for development of the game, and secondly, actually deliver on a few of the promises.
