Best way to upgrade structure material?

Hello I am trying to upgrade from thatch to wood by just taking the wood foundation over the thatch foundation but I cannot upgrade the floor where structures are on top of. Any trick to get around this? Or is there another way to upgrade the material the base is composed of? I am still relatively new to ATLAS.

No tricks unfortunately, but you could just expand with wood/stone and leave the thatch underneath your smithy
