Q about picking up loot crates.

Can you just run over them with you ship or do you get close and press a button?

I know about the grappling hook but I don't have one yet. 

I'm on the XB1.

If you run them over they break. Grappling hook is good. You can also just jump in and get it.

The simplest way is to stop your boat beside it, then jump over and get it.

The safer way is to use a diving suit so nothing will attack you.

The safest way is to use the grappling hook. Or throw a friend overboard.

Jumping in and get it is risky.  So have nothing of value on you when doing so. Most likely a few sharks will get you before getting back up the ladder.  Best to get a grapple.

Clip of me grappling down the side of my ship to get my dead body loot back.  So think twice before diving in for a loot chest that maybe has blueprints of stuff you already investing with skill points.  Also best to just get a grapple and learn how to snag treasure chest while ship is still moving fast.  Cause if the sharks don't get you. Undead will be there quick once you hear the music kick in if your sails are down gathering loot.
