    State of the Game and Ask a Pirate Day - Q&A with the Devs #3

    Ahoy Pathfinders.

    Right now, the crew is working diligently on Ship of the Damned issues where they are not moving as they should. We will also be addressing the ship skeletons that are not despawning, amongst other issues as well.

    :anchor: Shifting the Meta :anchor:

    Since season 1, many hours have gone into creating PVP centric mechanics in ATLAS. Seasons 2 and 3 saw many changes that restricted the use of these mechanics. We’re interested in highlighting these unique mechanics, and are looking at different ways to bring them back into the mix and balance them further. As the current state of the game develops, so will the meta.

    Starting with the next patch, we’ll be unveiling a quick survey on the latest changes that all players can take, so that we can get a better understanding of the community’s sentiments.

    Question: When will we get a feature complete small group map where all the content is included? If I missed it, don't hesitate to point me in the right direction. Blackwood is broken/doesn't have all resources. We had a 4x4 private server and our group tried Blackwood when it launched, but the resources are reversed, and there are only a few types of rare metals/woods etc.

    Answer: There's no clear roadmap for that right now. We are putting everything behind cleaning up the main game and adding new features to it.

    Question: When ATLAS first released, it was mentioned that humans would be able to create offspring, is that tabled forever? Reference: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/12/19/atlas-pirate-mmo-developer-interview/

    Answer: We totally want this, but we think it's fair to say that this is a long way off. Atlas has many bugs and systems that need to be optimized / improved. Once we get that down, we can expand into this kind of territory.

    Question: Are you considering more PvE ocean jobs like strictly whaling, lobstering, shrimping or fishing for rare aquatic stuff? 

    Answer: Yes! You get it! We really want to put way more things for players to do on the ocean and that is one line of our two prong strategy. We are halftime working on cleaning up the code, which means removing bugs and readdressing broken systems, and the other half of the time we are focused on more ocean-centric features.

    Question: Will there ever be more underwater ships (in addition to submarine) for a new level of combat? 

    Answer: There are lots to fix and improve in the main game before we expand to this. Right now the team is focusing on getting a solid base of fun coming from the existing game with a larger number of players playing.

    Question: What about the problem where we sail into a lot of SoTD after crossing another server? I sunk 2 times because of it... 1 time with a brig and 1 with a schooner. They are so often way too close to the server edge. I don't mind fighting them, but sailing into 2-4 SoTD will kill any small ship, especially without any canons. How can we react that fast? When we reach another server, they already shoot before we even see that they are attacking.

    Answer: Having Ships of the Damned crossing into other servers can make this dynamic encounter more in-depth. We hear you about loading into a grid just to get attacked.  The right balance is more complicated than you might think and this team is committed to doing things the right way.

    Y-y-y-y-ye-e-e-eah... right. How about warehouses? Is it OK so just 2-3 players per island able to build it in lawless (with 500 meters from eachother)? I can't build my because another player's warehouse is closer than 500 meters from my base.

    I want to ask why the barrel bomb update. It resulted in overcrowded freeports, common schooners killing mythic galleons/brigs, pretty any ship that gets the first volley of barrels off. There was a reason barrels where taken out of cannons in season one. I would like to know why it was decided to return to this mechanic ?

    1: Is PvE on the backburner at this point?  2: When will we have a team to look into grieving and harassment issues? (we had them at one time and do not now?) On a positive note I see that PvE has as many people on one server as there is on the higher  PvP server. That in itself has to show value to the PvE'rs as well, I would hope. 3: Distancing on farms and on warehouses makes it so people cannot put down one even after destroying 3 around it. This part is very confusing.

    4: When is the next Wipe? - Season End etc?

    When will we see a update on the Devkit cause not having it yet will keep delaying RP servers to launch cause they cant test mods they make for them

    I have a question, why reduce 1 wood type to 1 island and on that island only have it spawn @10% of that island, how dose that make sense especially in PvE, i can only image the hell that is going on in PvP for that island

    oh and by all means ignore this and every other  question that you can't try and spin in a stupid positive way and just pat your self on your back for making changes that the previous Devs would never have done

    I do have some more understanding of why a few things are done now for meta change.

    Question: Do you think the game is set up for larger companies? Are you aware that megas wipe new lawless players daily and discourage them from the game? Will there ever be a attempt again to separate small companies from megas server wise?

    I know this did not work with Empires and Colonies and even if a company is only allowed maximum 10 players and 1 alliance group, they can just look if red tagged and not be fired apon. Why not just bring the idea of the Colonies server back and if large companies are playing against the rules then ban/wipe them from the Colony server.

    The current playerbase is insanely low for this early in the season, but I'd put money on if you opened a small tribe server like ARK there would be a large influx of smaller companies

    Can someone tell the dev's to make a small company server like come on who would disapprove of that, the only people that would be against it would be the claim obsessed mega tribes on the official servers. Make it just like Ark Survival Evolved, only 5 company members in a company and no alliances allowed. All the non-mega tribe folk (atleast 80% of us lads) would flock to that server and have a jolly ole time not having to deal with those power obsessed peeps. There'd hardly be a server where you'd get 5 fps from just entering because of the dozens of gallons docked uselessly at sea. upvote so the dev's lords can sea this-

    What about adressing BP´s ?
    Currently you can get medium gunports,cannons and decks that are nearly twice as high in dmg and durability than any stuff you can get from fighting Sotd´s.

    How should doing maps bring us more to sea?

    When are you going to bring back the NA PVE?? The lag gets sooooooooooo bad when you get in a lawless area it is hard to do anything at all when you take 2 steps and end up back where you were over and over...I was able to understand that taking it down so you can use it for testing was needed but to shaft all of the American players and say deal with it is killing the game... If you think it is easy to play when the ping is 150 to 250 all the time in lawless you need to grow up... You were not able to get things right when you just had to rework the map like the polar and tundra are reversed Tundra IS colder than polar like you had it last season.. If all you want to support is the PVP end of the game and say fuck you to all of us PVE players you have killed the game officially before you even release it.. You ask for input from players and the only ones you even take questions from are the PVP guys and avoid us PVE guys... You cherry pick the questions that are easy to answer and shun the real questions that people want to know...

    What about us Xbox players and the HORRIBLE LAG!! We were a small company of 3 but can’t survive as a small company so we merged into a bigger company but the lag on their island is horrible for us. We are limited on where we can go in the island due to the lag, caused one of our three people to quit the game. When are you going to fix the lag issues for US XBOX PLAYERS!?!?!

    If you guys need a better Public Relations, I would be happy to discuss with you.  This Q & A only answered ONE question that everyone on the discord is talking about.  The Q & A talking about future additions to the game, when there are a lot of questions regarding the game's current condition that people would really like some answers to.  This is kind of customer service 101, to retain the current players and keep your current customers happy.  Otherwise, you'll lose them, and they may not come back.  Plenty of other developers putting out similar games.  I would think player retention would be a top priority.  Focus inward before focusing outward.  I am a modest gamer, I only play at night when my wife and kid go to sleep, lol, but really do enjoy the game.  However, I have been experiencing some serious problems with the game, keep getting kicked out, and unable to spawn back in without getting kicked out again.  I would be happy to share my experience more with you for a better understanding of a basic user on an Xbox.

    Question: When are u going to do some real Q&A with real questions from players.

    Awnser devs: w're good the way it is, we come up with our own Q&A's and give the answer ourself. but we make it look like the questions are coming from the community.

    another joke of a Q&A,

    maybe go back to the basics and start fixing your game  instead of break the game even more with everything u try to add for fun.

    - Have Nitrado get their act together and provide stable servers. 

    - fix the insane amount of bugs that u managed to get since the start of the season.

    - lit a fire under your support ticket team, instead of them closing it instantly. U tolerate Racism in the game, why ?  u think it will make u look good as a company when u dont take a stand against racism?

    i can write 2 pages full with shit u need to fix and have done so but simple fact is , u don't give a shit about your own game and it shows in the state it is in atm.

     

    @Chismebeard @Nami said he valued and needed our help to make the game better yet he ignores everything that is been said to him, including clear cut reports about racism.

    would be cool if we could tame crocodiles or something new to add to help defend the base or island. and what about that flying ship that shows in the atlas beginning.

    this should be resolved in another way. Make it so megatribes can benefit from having small companies around. Let them plant a TAXFLAG in a small company base so they can benefit from them.

    Please bring the other server grids online. The map was made too small for the amount of people we have on pve. Love the map layout but those other grids would be really nice to spread people apart. I am currently unable to even expand my base because I chose not to pillar spam what I wanted to prevent others from building.

    What a joke.

    The problem with this...is you may not have a large number of players playing when you get done with whatever you are working on. While you're fixing fixing fixing improving improving improving your community is imploding imploding imploding.

    There are some serious issues introduced recently that have yet to be fixed.

    The last question, you could have easily said "let's put a band-aide (pick a solution from the many suggestions in your forums) on this issue that has been haunting the game forever (This has literally been in SINCE LAUNCH and commented on by the community SINCE LAUNCH) and work on a longer term fix for a more sustainable system for the future."....but no, it was another non-answer putting it a long way off, just like the rest of the answers you gave in this Q&A. It was an easy opportunity for a win that you wasted.

    I joked on twitter when I hit 1234 hours played...said I should retire. Due to stressful issues that started happening with the server I was primary admin for...I stepped down from being the admin, let others take over, and haven't played since, my hours count remains at that number. It has been almost a month since I played at all. This post does nothing to make me want to continue to pay any attention to this game.

    What is REALLY needed is to separate Settlers from Alliances. If the island owners could accept and reject settler requests and they would be instantly red tagged or white listed for the settlers of the island. as well as an approved island settlers chat instead of having all of your settlers see your alliance chat.

    As it is now, settlers need to be allied or they are end up a liability to building and island defenses, as well as a security leak liability with their access to ally chat. And with the current state of the game, if the settler is not worth having for mutual defense and attacks, they are not worth blue tagging. Which means a lot of these tiny 3-8 man companies are not able to find a place to live outside of lawless unless they merge into a larger company.

    I'd like to see more work done with NPC's. 

    The farmhouse and warehouse was a good idea but instead of being fully auto, why not have it run by NPC's which have to harvest and survive, as well as the usual payment and food supplied.

    Auto Pilot on ships should also be enhanced.  NPC's could have a skill tree so you can have a pilot steering the ship whilst you make the calls from the podium.  The current setup is half baked.

    SOTD rewards are very poor as well, I can invest a significant amount of time into sinking multiple high level SOTD to get a couple of hundred gold and mythical cloth armour.

    This is a fantastic game with great potential, it just needs more daily content to keep us engaged.

    I think the introduction of farms and warehouses into the game is a big mistake !!! You are killing a huge part of the content! Previously, you had to tame animals, you had to find food for them, grow these cereals, animals could be raised for yourself and for sale, it was a great move for content in the game! RETURN IT ALL BACK !!!

    These farms and warehouses have dirtied all the landscapes of the islands! You can no longer think about the aesthetic form of the game ??

    Learn to create a variety of quests in the game! Add interesting and functional NPCs to the game, add new bosses for variety, let rare and necessary ingredients fall from them! Develop and add a more interesting and varied crafting system, create better recipes and ingredients that are not so easy to obtain, perhaps even in a chain of certain quests!

    Return the old card with its contents! The old card had the correct logic! Equator, on both sides of the biome, smoothly reaching the ice! This is so correct and logical!
